Brownsberg is a nature reserve located in the Brokopondo district, approximately 130 km south of Paramaribo. This expansive area spans over 12,000 hectares and offers a unique variety of plants and wildlife. The region is known for its diverse medicinal plants, traditionally used for treating injuries and illnesses. The most vibrant wildlife can often be spotted at sunrise and sunset. The jungle frequently echoes with the loud calls of howler monkeys, and with some luck, you may catch a glimpse of wild deer or Pakira (forest pigs).
In the high treetops, you'll find an abundance of tropical bird species, while evenings welcome you with a variety of insects drawn to the light.
We begin our journey from Paramaribo, embarking on a drive to the beautiful Brownsberg Nature Park. Visitors to this protected area will enjoy breathtaking views of the nearby Brokopondo Lake and the surrounding tropical rainforest. The park’s main attractions include numerous mountain trails that lead to refreshing streams and small waterfalls scattered across the hills, as well as remarkable encounters with the lush flora and fauna of the region.
After the hike to the waterfalls, there will be an opportunity to have lunch (at your own expense) at a local restaurant. We will return to Paramaribo in the late afternoon.
