Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where our driver will greet you and transfer you to Chanya Lodge in Moshi. Settle in, relax, and meet your guides for a trip briefing and gear check before the adventure begins.

Begin Your Adventure in the Rainforest

After registration at Londorossi Gate, we start trekking through lush rainforest alive with monkeys and birds. Tonight we camp at Mti Mkubwa (“Big Tree”) Camp, surrounded by thick jungle.

Climb Into the Moorlands & Reach the Shira Plateau

The trail leaves the forest and opens into moorland with wide views across ridges and valleys. We gradually climb up to the expansive Shira Plateau, camping at Shira 1.

Cross the Shira Plateau with Views from Shira Cathedral

We cross rolling moorlands, stopping at the Shira Cathedral viewpoint for dramatic panoramas before continuing to Shira 2 Camp, where Kibo Peak dominates the horizon.

Acclimatization Day – Hike High, Sleep Low

A steady climb brings us to the volcanic rock formation of Lava Tower for lunch. We then descend into the lush Barranco Valley, camping beneath towering cliffs and giant groundsels.

Conquer the Barranco Wall & Explore the Karanga Valley

We start the day by scaling the Barranco Wall, a fun and scenic climb with rewarding views. The trail continues across ridges and valleys before a final ascent to Karanga Camp.

  • Ending Elevation: 13,106 ft (3,995 m)

  • Elevation Gain: ~62 ft (19 m) net (with multiple ascents/descents)

Reach Base Camp & Prepare for the Summit

A steady upward trail leads us to Barafu Camp, perched high on a barren ridge. Here we rest, refuel, and prepare for the midnight push to the summit of Kilimanjaro.

Summit Day – Stand on the Roof of Africa

We begin just after midnight, climbing by headlamp to Stella Point and onward to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft / 5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, we descend to Millennium Camp for a well-earned rest.

Descend Through the Rainforest & Celebrate in Moshi

A final hike through lush rainforest brings us to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. From there, transfer back to Chanya Lodge in Moshi for a hot shower and celebration dinner.

  • Ending Elevation (Mweka Gate): 5,380 ft (1,640 m)

Add-On Extensions FAQ

Can I add an extension later?
Yes. You can add an extension after booking your Kilimanjaro trek, but we recommend selecting it at the time of booking to ensure smooth planning and availability.

Are flights to Zanzibar included?
Flights to Zanzibar are not included in the extension price. We are happy to connect you to a local travel agent in Moshi, who can help you with the Zanzibar flights upon request.

What meals are included?
Lunch is included on all day tours and each day of the Zanzibar extension. Dinners are on your own, giving you the freedom to enjoy local restaurants and cuisine.

Do I need extra accommodations before/after the extension?
Yes additional hotel nights in Moshi are required if you choose to add an extension before or after your climb. Early arrival hotel or late departure hotel is $85/night/person.

Is transportation included if I arrive before the scheduled arrival day or after the scheduled departure day?

No transportation is not included if you arrive outside of the scheduled arrival day on the itinerary or stay after the scheduled departure day on the itinerary. Transport is $40/person one-way from the airport to the hotel or hotel to the airport.

Can I do more than one extension?
Yes. Some guests enjoy combining the Moshi Town Day Tour or Maasai Village & Chemka Tour with the Zanzibar Extension for a complete Tanzania experience.

Do you offer other safaris or tours?
