The best of South Africa - Cape Town & Safari

general icon

Welcome to South Africa

Imagine waking up in a country so alive, breathtakingly beautiful, full of possibilities, and awe-inspiring that every moment feels like a new beginning.
You're standing at the edge of the African continent, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans collide, and the world opens in front of you. You hear the roaring crash of waves at Cape Point, feel the salt spray on your warm skin, and experience being completely present and part of something vast and extraordinary.

African Cape Penguins waddle between huge boulders as you sink your toes into the beautiful white sandy beach. Later, witness the breathtaking rugged coastal panoramas of the world-famous Chapman's Peak. As you drive through Cape Town, colors burst from every street, and cultures blend into something vibrant and unforgettable.
You sip world-class wine as the sky melts into gold over the Atlantic, while indulging in exquisite cuisine.

Then, you trade the city’s energy for the stillness of the African bush.
You step onto the safari vehicle for the first time, your chest humming with excitement as you wonder what you will see and experience first. Out on the vehicle, there are no windows, no filters, no demands. Just you, fresh air, and the raw, unedited African bush. You catch yourself with a big smirk on your face, feeling happy and content.

Then suddenly, the vehicle slows down.

You look up and lay your eyes on a herd of elephants stepping out from the tree line. Mothers and calves of all ages gracefully follow in the footsteps of the matriarch. You sit in absolute stillness, barely breathing as the world narrows to this one perfect moment. Out here, time doesn’t hurry; it invites you to simply be.

More wildlife reveals itself as the day unfolds, every moment powerful and unforgettable.

Later, with a Gin and tonic in hand, you watch the silhouettes of giraffes move across the skyline. The sun sinks into the horizon, painting the savanna in colors you didn’t know existed.

This is more than a journey.
It’s a sensory awakening.
A reconnection to nature, adventure, and yourself.

South Africa invites you to slow down, breathe deeper, and experience moments that stay with you long after you’ve returned home.

If you’ve been dreaming of a place that changes you…

You’ve just found it.

Welcome. Your South African journey begins now.

Early Morning Game Drive

One of the best experiences is to be awakened by the African bush. Birds announce the break of day and, somewhere in the distance, a Black-backed Jackal might be calling upon its mate. If you aren't already awake from these beautiful sounds, an early wakeup call at around 05:00 will commence. Coffee and rusks will be served at the dining area. There is no better feeling than standing on the deck with a fresh cup of Joe, overlooking the vast African wilderness. Your mind will wander, and the stresses of everyday life will feel long gone.

At around 05:30, we will board the safari vehicle to experience whatever the bush might reveal. Your excitement at this stage will be overwhelming as the wheels turn away from the lodge in search of marvellous animals. As the bush awakens, you will be immersed in sights, smells, and sounds you never knew existed. What a glorious day to be in Africa!

We may stop for a quick coffee break depending on sightings. Then, we’ll return to the lodge, capturing unforgettable photographs along the way.

Immersive Safari with Game Drives and Bush Walks

activity icon

Early Morning Game Drives

There’s something magical about a morning safari. Your guide will wake you before dawn, while everything is still cloaked in soft shadows and dew. The air is cool, crisp, and filled with earthy scents like wet grass, morning dust, or the distant musky smell of a nearby elephant. As the sky transforms with fiery orange and red colors, we set out into a world that is just beginning to stir. This is prime time for predators. Lions are often on the move, hunting or socializing. Leopards may be seen moving around or lying in trees, cleaning their paws after a successful nighttime hunt. Wild dogs hunt quickly and silently before the day’s heat forces them to rest. Birdsong peaks; the bush is alive with the chorus of doves, the trill of francolins, and the whoop of a hyena announcing itself in the distance. The light is soft, golden, magical—photographers call it “the golden hour” for good reason. Everything seems more vibrant and rich, imbued with warmth and intimacy. There’s a sense of freshness and possibility; every track is recent, visible in the damp soil. Every detail offers a glimpse into the secrets of the night just passed. We return to camp mid-morning, hearts full, dust on our boots, and stories to share. Breakfast never tastes as good as it does after an epic morning on safari.

activity icon

Bush Walks with Ranger

After breakfast, you can embark on a bush walk with your ranger. This is a great opportunity to explore the smaller details of nature as your ranger teaches you about insects, grasses, trees, wildflowers, animal droppings, and even animal tracks.

meal icon

Lunch at Lodge

Lunch will be served around 1:30 - 2:00 pm, followed by a refreshing siesta. If the day is sunny, take a dip in the crystal-clear pool overlooking the plain and waterhole. A good swim will leave you refreshed and ready for the next game drive.

activity icon

Afternoon Game Drives

Typically, the afternoon safari begins lazily, with the heat of the day still lingering in the air. We set out around 3:30 - 4 p.m. The majority of the wildlife will be resting: lions sprawled in the shade, leopards hidden in cool branches, elephants swimming or bathing in mud wallows or waterholes, and even the ever-present impalas seeking refuge from the sun. This is a time of observation and anticipation. Slowly, a change begins. As the heat fades, the bush awakens. Animals start to move, and you feel a shift in the temperature; some become alert. This is when predators may rise again, stretching, yawning, and smelling the air. The light softens, and the trees turn to silhouettes as the sky bursts with reds, oranges, and purples. It’s time for sundowners, with a gin and tonic in hand, often accompanied by wildlife while the sun sets on the African horizon. This moment is not just beautiful; it’s sacred. The kind of beauty that silences conversation and holds you gently in its grip.

Then, the night arrives with new expectations. Trackers will search for eyes reflecting in the dark. Nocturnal animals like bush babies leaping in trees, civets slinking across the road, or owls silently gliding overhead are what we seek. The thrill of the unknown is exhilarating, as anything can appear in the spotlight's beam. You return to camp under a blanket of stars, welcomed back by friendly lodge staff.

meal icon

Dinner at Lodge

Sitting next to the fire after a hearty and delicious meal, you simply can’t help but feel true contentment and happiness. You realize you’ve just lived another chapter of Africa’s wild, eternal story. Sleeping after such a wonderful day will come naturally.

Final Sabi Sands Safari and Transfer to Greenfire

activity icon

Final Morning Game Drive in Sabi Sands

Your final morning in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve arrives quietly, with a hush in the air—partly due to the natural stillness of the bush before dawn, and partly from the knowledge that this is your last game drive in this spectacular reserve. You wake in darkness to a soft knock on your door and savour one last fresh coffee. The bush feels alive once more; you hear the distant roar of lions, playful resident impalas, and the sun just beginning to peek over the horizon. As you climb into the safari vehicle for one last drive, there's a shift in feeling. You’re no longer just a visitor; you've started to read the bush—footprints, calls, distant movements—like a language you’ve begun to understand. The final drive is unhurried. A mother leopard pauses in the road, her cub trailing close behind, and a herd of buffalo stirs up dust as they graze. Somewhere out of sight, the familiar sound of the Woodlands Kingfisher calls. You don’t need another photo; just be present and hold the memories close to your heart. As the sun rises higher, you return to camp, feeling sad yet full of gratitude. The Sabi Sands offered you proximity, intimacy, and a sense of wildlife as performers in their own theater. You’ve seen it and experienced it, but it’s not over yet. It’s a farewell for now, but the safari excitement continues at our next lodge.

Bush Walks and Final Game Drive in Balule

activity icon

Morning Bush Walk in Balule Nature Reserve

This morning (if weather permits), we exchange the comfort of the safari vehicle for a more immersive 'boots on the ground' experience. Meeting up with the guide and tracker just before sunrise, we head off into the bush to see everything from a different perspective. Your small group moves in single file, led by an armed ranger. It’s not about covering distance; it’s about connecting with the environment. All your senses awaken—every sound sharper, every scent more intense, each step deliberate. The ranger and tracker lead at a slow pace, stopping often to listen and observe signs known only to the darkness. Signs are everywhere, each telling a story. The guide pauses to point out a fresh leopard track in the sand heading toward a rocky ridge. Further along, a broken branch and large tracks reveal an elephant that passed hours earlier. Next, the guide stops at a termite mound, crumbling the clay to reveal tiny soldier ants defending their world beneath your feet. You see a klipspringer frozen on a boulder, watching your every move. Lilac-breasted rollers flash their brilliant blue and violet colors as they dive from trees to swoop up insects below. A dung beetle tenaciously rolls its treasure across your path, prompting awe as everyone stands in silence to observe. The guide kneels beside a wild basil plant, crushing a few leaves between his fingers and holding them out for everyone to smell. The scent is fresh, sharp, and unmistakably African. As the sun climbs, a shaded outcrop offers a moment to rest and enjoy a water break. Everyone is quiet, mesmerized by the incredible scenery and experience. The bush is truly alive, as are you. Walking back to the lodge, you can’t help but feel overwhelmed with emotions—fear and anxiety replaced by joy, happiness, gratitude, and perhaps a big hunger after a good morning walk, ha-ha. (The bush walk activity is completely optional; if you're not comfortable, you can still enjoy a traditional safari in the vehicle.)

Afternoon Game Drive in Balule Nature Reserve

The last afternoon game drive in Africa is tinged with something deeper—anticipation, reverence, and a touch of quiet sorrow. The sky is soft with late-afternoon gold as you board the open Land Cruiser for the final time. The vehicle stops at a scenic lookout—perhaps overlooking a watering hole or a baobab-dotted ridge. Gin and tonics are poured, and snacks are served just in time to witness the majestic sunset over the distant Drakensberg Escarpment in the West. The silence is profound, broken only by the call of francolins or the distant roar of a lion. As the African sun dips over the horizon for the last time on your ultimate South African experience, you feel a deep connection to something so raw and beautiful.

Last Game Drive and Return to Canada

activity icon

Final Morning Game Drive

The final morning of your safari begins with a unique stillness. It’s not the hush before dawn, but the quiet ache of knowing this is your last game drive. Take a moment to simply gaze over the bushveld; one extra cup of coffee is certainly in order. You climb onto the vehicle with its worn canvas seat and dust all over. You’ve done this routine many times, but this one feels different. Every sound is sharper, every shadow deeper, every moment more precious. As the sun rises in the east, bathing the bush in that golden light you’ve come to love, you notice details you hadn’t before — the delicate architecture of a spiderweb, the way the morning mist hovers over the grass, the tenderness between a mother impala and her lamb. You’re no longer a guest in this place. You’re part of it. You have African dust on your shoes.

One last stop for coffee at a nearby waterhole feels different. The hippos are snorting, and a few impalas scamper away. The Egyptian geese are louder than ever, and the distant call of the African fish eagle sends shivers down your spine. You pause. You listen. You feel it.

As we turn back toward camp for the final time, a quiet gratitude settles over you — not just for what you saw, but for what you felt: the awe, the peace, the wildness, the silence. Africa is no longer just a place you visited. It's a part of you now, a part that will call you back, again and again. As you say goodbye to the staff, the guides, the trackers, and the land itself, you’re not really leaving. You're simply stepping away, knowing that some goodbyes are only temporary. Because no one ever visits Africa just once. Africa changed you, and you now have marvelous memories etched in your heart. Sadly, this comes to an end, but hopefully, it ends on a high note.

  • All guests will be required to sign an indemnity form before arrival.

Wi-Fi and Cellphone Coverage:

  • Wi-Fi will be available to guests in their rooms or dining areas at all accommodations. Most restaurants and coffee shops generally offer free Wi-Fi.

  • Airalo E-SIMs are a great alternative if constant internet is required. Please see the full blog post here.

Cash and Credit Cards:

  • Both cash and all major credit cards are accepted throughout South Africa, including restaurants, shops, and bars. It is recommended to carry small amounts of cash for items like bottled water.

  • Each room will also be equipped with a small safe. It is highly advisable to lock up extra cash, passports, and other private documents.

Laundry Service:

  • A laundry service is available at all lodges for an additional charge, which will be billed to your room. Prices depend on the size of the load.

Dietary Requirements:

  • Any dietary requirements or allergies can be accommodated if mentioned during the registration process.

Gratuity:

  • Gratuities are customary in South Africa. If you receive good service, kindly leave something for the hardworking staff who ensure you have a fabulous time. These gratuity details will be discussed in more detail during a live Zoom meeting closer to departure.

Visa Requirements:

  • Canadian citizens using Canadian passports do not need a visa to enter South Africa for tourism or business stays of up to ninety (90) days.

Health Requirements:

  • Vaccinations against DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, and polio) and Hepatitis A are recommended. Most individuals receive DTP vaccinations in childhood. After a new shot, you won’t need another for about ten years. A typhoid vaccination is recommended if you plan to stay more than three months in South Africa.

  • This is entirely your choice regarding vaccinations, but remember that prevention is better than cure. It could be worthwhile to consult your doctor.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in South Africa. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is only required if arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever, such as Kenya, Tanzania, or Ghana.

Malaria:

  • Generally, South Africa is low risk for malaria, but it is still recommended to use anti-malaria medication while visiting as a precaution. Consult with your doctor regarding the best type of medication for you.
