Vagabond Moto presents the Dargo 4 Day — High Country Edition.

Based out of Dargo, this four-day GPS-guided adventure is built for single-cylinder bikes and designed to showcase the raw terrain and remote backcountry of the Victorian High Country. From rugged ridgelines above the Dargo High Plains to the river valleys of Crooked River and Talbotville, each loop delivers a distinct mix of climbs, spurs, forestry roads and iconic mountain tracks.

Riders roll out each morning after breakfast and head straight into the mountains, tackling everything from Blue Rag Range to historic mining routes and sweeping alpine dirt. Every day returns to Dargo by afternoon, creating a simple, repeatable rhythm of ride, reset and reload, with dinner shared each night in town.

This is pure High Country riding! Four days of varied terrain, big views and remote country, shaped around the bikes and the riders that suit it best.

What to Expect

What to Expect image

What to expect!

From the ridgelines above the Dargo High Plains to the river valleys of Crooked River and Talbotville, the Dargo 4-Day is a GPS-guided adventure built for single-cylinder bikes and the terrain they suit best. Designed around long climbs, remote tracks and iconic High Country viewpoints, this first edition captures the essence of riding in and around Dargo.

Each day begins at the Dargo Hotel with breakfast before heading out on a new loop. With GPX routes, sweep riders and support at key points, riders move at their own pace across alpine rises, forest trails and historic mining routes — from Blue Rag Range to winding spurs and river crossings deep in the valleys.

Across four days, the route links High Plains country near Dinner Plain with remote cattlemen’s tracks and flowing dirt back into Dargo each afternoon. Evenings are relaxed and social, with dinner provided nightly at the Dargo Hotel — the perfect chance to reset and prepare for the next loop.

This is pure High Country riding: four days of rugged terrain, big views and the camaraderie that naturally comes with small-bore adventure in the mountains.

Minimum 150km fuel range and knobby tyres (Pirelli MX32/XC or equivalent)

What bike to bring

What bike to bring image

The Dargo 4-Day is built for single-cylinder adventure and enduro bikes, which offer the right balance of agility and control for Dargo’s steep climbs, river sections and varied alpine terrain. A KTM 690 Enduro is the practical upper limit for this event, with bikes in the 250–500cc range providing the most capability across the High Country.

Bikes must have a minimum fuel range of 150 km. To support this, every rider receives an ADVWORX 5L fuel bladder for additional reach on longer loops. Riders wanting extra margin can fit an oversized tank, though it isn’t essential.

The terrain rewards strong traction, so fresh knobby tyres such as Pirelli MX32/XC or similar are strongly recommended. The mix of loose rock, clay, hardpack and riverbeds makes a modern enduro tyre the most effective choice. (Our team are available on sign in day to change tyres if needed).

Since the event is fully GPS-guided, reliable navigation is mandatory. A Garmin Zumo XT2 or similar is the preferred setup, but riders may alternatively use a secondary phone running Gaia GPS to follow the supplied GPX files accurately.

Set up with appropriate range, traction and navigation, your bike will be ready for everything the High Country delivers over the four days of epic riding!

Loop 1 sets the tone immediately, dropping riders into the Crooked River valley along a historic mining corridor of flowing flats and frequent crossings. The terrain alternates between river stones, hardpack and tight bends, playing perfectly to lightweight single-cylinder bikes.

From the valley floor, the route climbs hard toward the alpine country and onto the Blue Rag Range, following the narrow ridgeline to the Trig Point above the tree line. The ascent is steep, exposed and rewarding, with uninterrupted views across the High Country.

The loop then opens out onto the Dargo High Plains Road, linking fast, flowing alpine sections that provide a smooth contrast to the technical start of the day before rolling back into Dargo by afternoon. It’s a strong introduction to the region and a clear preview of the terrain to come.

Loop 2 heads into the remote eastern side of the range, linking historic tracks and river corridors that contrast sharply with the high alpine terrain of Day 1. The route runs steadily out of Dargo before dropping onto Haunted Stream Track, a winding valley trail of fern-lined corridors, rock shelves and frequent creek crossings that reward smooth throttle and careful line choice.

As the country opens, the loop continues toward Ensay through broader river flats and rolling farmland, offering a change of pace before climbing into the low ranges toward Powers Gully. A mix of forestry tracks and narrow spurs leads into the approach to Dogs Grave, a well-known High Country waypoint set in open timbered hills.

From Dogs Grave, flowing ridge sections and long descents guide the route back toward Dargo, finishing with a mix of open gravel and shaded bush tracks. It’s a long, varied day that showcases the High Country’s historic valleys, technical creek lines and wide, rolling terrain.

Loop 3 steps into steeper, more rugged country around the Wonnangatta system, built around long climbs, ridgeline traverses and remote backcountry spurs. After a steady approach, the route climbs onto Cynthia Range Track, lifting quickly from the valleys onto open ridges with wide views across the Wonnangatta and toward East Gippsland. Surfaces shift between shale, embedded rock and firm clay, rewarding light bikes and confident positioning.

From the ridgeline, the loop drops onto Wonnangatta Spur, a narrow connector with steep pinches, tight switchbacks and a strong sense of isolation as it descends into cooler, timbered gullies. The climb out leads onto Selwyn Track, a flowing mid-elevation trail that links spurs and ridges with a mix of fast sections and slower, off-camber corners.

The final leg follows Long Spur Track, running high above the valleys before a long descent back toward Dargo. It’s a full mountain day that highlights the raw, remote character of the High Country and plays directly to the strengths of lightweight single-cylinder bikes.

Loop 4 finishes the ride with one of the High Country’s most iconic climbs. Rolling out of Dargo, the route heads toward Billy Goats Bluff Track, a steep, sustained ascent that rises sharply from the valley floor onto the high ridgeline above. The climb is rocky and exposed in places, perfectly suited to lightweight bikes, with the views opening wider as elevation builds.

From the top, the loop continues along the ridge to The Pinnacles Lookout, where a short walk delivers sweeping views across deep valleys and jagged ranges stretching back toward Wonnangatta and Crooked River. The return leg follows flowing ridge sections and easier descents, easing the pace as the route drops back toward Dargo.

Shorter and less demanding than earlier days, Loop 4 offers a rewarding final climb, a standout viewpoint and a relaxed roll back into town to close out the week.
