Elevation gain: 5,400ft to 9,400ft
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Day 2 begins your journey on the mountain with a 50-minute drive from Moshi to Machame Gate. From here, you’ll step into the dense rainforest, trekking along a winding ridge surrounded by towering trees and the sounds of nature. The trail can be muddy and slick, adding a bit of adventure to your first day. By late afternoon, you’ll reach Machame Camp, your home for the night.
Elevation gain: 9,400ft to 12,500 ft
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
After breakfast, you’ll transition out of the rainforest and into a new landscape, trekking along a steep, heather-covered ridge with expansive views beginning to open around you. As the ridge fades, the trail turns west into a river gorge, guiding you to Shira Camp for your overnight stay.
Elevation gain: 12,000ft to 16,000ft to 13,000ft
Hiking time: 6-8 hours
Today plays a vital role in your acclimatization, following the “climb high, sleep low” approach that prepares your body for summit success. Starting from the Shira Plateau, you’ll trek east along a ridge with views of Kibo Peak before turning southeast toward the iconic Lava Tower. After reaching higher altitude, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp at 13,000 ft, where you’ll relax, recover, and spend the night.
Elevation gain: 13,000ft to 13,100ft
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
After breakfast, you’ll leave Barranco Camp and take on the famous Barranco Wall, ascending a steep ridge with rewarding views as you climb. The trail then leads you into the Karanga Valley, where you’ll arrive at camp early. This shorter day is designed to support acclimatization and give your body time to adjust.
Elevation gain: 13,100ft to 15,300ft
Hiking time: 4-5 hours
After breakfast, you’ll depart Karanga Camp and ascend toward Barafu Camp, joining the trail that connects with the Mweka Route. Along the way, you’ll complete the South Circuit, taking in stunning views of the summit from different perspectives. Once at camp, you’ll rest and prepare for the final push, with Mawenzi and Kibo peaks standing prominently in view.
Elevation gain: 15,300ft to 19,341ft to 10,000ft
Hiking time: Ascent 7-8 hours; Descent 4-6 hours
Just before midnight, you’ll begin your final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. This is the most demanding stretch of the journey—cold, windy, and pushing you both physically and mentally. As dawn breaks, you’ll reach Stella Point at 18,652 ft, where the sunrise over Mawenzi Peak creates a moment you’ll never forget. From there, a final push brings you to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. After celebrating and taking in the achievement, you’ll begin your descent, eventually reaching Mweka Camp before dusk for your overnight stay.
Elevation gain: 12,467ft to 5,380ft
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
After breakfast, you’ll descend through the beautiful montane forest, making your way to the park gate by midday. There, your driver will meet you and take you back to Chanya Lodge. A hot shower, a moment to celebrate, your summit certificate, and the heartfelt tipping ceremony with your crew await. This evening is yours to rest, reflect, and take in the magnitude of what you’ve just accomplished.
If your time in Tanzania ends today, our team will make sure you are transferred to the Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departing flight. If you have booked and extended stay for one of our safaris or a day trip, we will be there to assist you in the next steps for your extended stay.
