The Likumbi Lya Mize traditional ceremony takes place at the conclusion of the Mukanda, an initiation rite aimed at young people aged 8 to 12. This ritual is celebrated by the Vaka Chiyama communities, which include the Luvale, Chokwe, Luchazi, and Mbunda, residing in the northwestern region of Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola. The ceremony begins 1 to 3 months prior with a ceremony called Mukanda, when children are taken away from their families to symbolize their "death" as children and become "tundanji", those who no longer belong to the world of the living.
The Mukanda involves the circumcision of children, tests of courage, and lessons about their future as men and husbands. Each initiate is assigned to a specific masked character that will stay with them throughout the rite. Among these masks is Chisaluke, representing a man with great wealth and influence over spirits; the Mupala, the "King" of the Mukanda and a protective spirit with supernatural abilities; Pwevo, representing the ideal woman and responsible for teaching children music and dances. Other characters include the Makishi, who represent the spirits of deceased ancestors returning to the world of the living to help their descendants become men.
The end of the Mukanda is celebrated with a ceremony called Chilende. The entire village witnesses the dances of the Makishi and symbolic performances until the children emerge from the place where they were hidden to "return to life" as adult men. This rite has strong educational value and teaches boys survival techniques and other fundamental concepts regarding nature, sexuality, religion, and other social values.

Wild Dogs Lodge offers four traditional thatched chalets, comfortably and cozily furnished, accommodating up to 20 guests. Located just 15 minutes from Lusaka International Airport and 20 minutes from the city center, the lodge is the ideal starting and ending point for your Zambian safari.
Early morning domestic flight from Lusaka to Solwezi, taking you over stunning landscapes and vibrant scenery. This short journey allows you to relax and take in the beauty of Zambia from the sky.
Upon arrival in Solwezi, you will be welcomed and start a long stretch of paved road (500km) to the Zambezi village, where we will stay for the following days to witness the celebration of Likumbi Lya Mize.

Makishi (the spirit of the ancestors of the Luvale people) emerge from their graves and possess the bodies of the dancers. These spirits, confused and disorientated are led by the Luvale women along the streets of Zambezi, screaming, shouting, dancing, and performing esoteric rituals along the way. At sunset, they will gather along the shores of the Zambezi River and cross by boat on the other side, symbolising the crossing of the passage from the world of the dead to the world of the living. Your expert guide will lead you through the village, ensuring you will always be at the centre of the celebrations.
This year, for the first time, two consecutive days will take place on the banks of the Zambezi River, where the Makishi will perform numerous dances in the afternoon of both days, including some important rituals such as the water dance and the crossing of the river of spirits.
On Wednesday morning, after breakfast, there will be an overview of the history of the Luvale People, their traditions, and the Likumbi Lya Mize, explaining the rituals and their significance by Giacomo Corsini and his local cultural advisors, who are part of the royal family of the Luvale people.
Afterward, there will be a canoe crossing of the Zambezi River and a celebration of the Likumbi Lya Mize.
On Thursday morning, there will be the opportunity to visit the Chavuma mission and the famous suspension bridge over the Zambezi River. We will then proceed to the beach for the third day of celebrations.
At sunset on Thursday, the Makishi will walk to the Mize palace, where they will be welcomed by the master of ceremonies and pledge loyalty to the King of Luvale. Return to the lodge. Lunch and dinner at the lodge, overnight at the lodge.
After breakfast, visit of the Zambezi village and purchase of gifts to present to the Senior Chief to thank him for his hospitality. We will then try to obtain a private meeting with the chief inside the Royal Palace of Mize, during which we may ask questions about the tradition of Likumbi Lya Mize or simply pay our respects (Please note: The chief will be extremely busy during this day, so we might have to wait a long time and audience might be rejected if he will be too busy meeting with politicians and dignitaries).
In the afternoon, the celebrations of Likumbi Lya Mize will take place outside the royal palace.
Immediately after breakfast, we cross the Zambezi River and reach the Royal Palace Arena, where the climax of Likumbi Lya Mize will take place. We will have VIP seats in a vantage position, being personal guests of the Royal Family.
Attention: it is possible that we will have to wait for quite some time to allow all the head of states, the politicians, and representatives of all tribes to reach the Arena. Therefore, we will have to be patient while waiting for everything to be ready.
During the day, there will be many celebrations and rituals that will be explained by your guide. Makishi will enter the arena and kneel in front of their king, while the living will be chanting the prise of the Luvale people. There will be numerous dances by the traditional dancers, animal sacrifice and finally the Tudanji children will come back to life in a climax of dances. Lunch and drinks can be bought from the numerous stands next to the arena.

Guests are woken before sunrise with a light breakfast.
At around 05.30 a.m. guests will start navigating to the Busanga plains before sunrise, to make sure to be in the most beautiful areas by the time of sunrise.
The Busanga Plains are famous worldwide for their incredible biodiversity and the large population of lions, often seen hunting or feasting on a kill.
After reaching the heart of the Plains, guests will start enjoying their Full Day Game Drive in the National Park until approximately 10.00 a.m. where they will stop for a spectacular mid-morning break with Cake, Tea & Coffee and whatever our chef has prepared for them. The Game Drive will then continue until 12.30 when the guide will choose a spectacular location for a pic-nic lunch.
After Lunch and a bit of relax enjoying the quietness of the natural environment, the Game Drive will continue until 16.00 when you will start your way back to the campsite, crossing the wonderful bush that surrounds the Busanga plains, and where it's more common to spot leopards at dusk.

After breakfast, we will dismantle the camp and depart for Lusaka. The route includes the first 4 hours (about 100km - 4 hours) inside the national park, followed by a paved road for another 270km to Lusaka (4 hours). Lunch break along the way with a packed lunch inside the national park.
