Safaris across Dudhwa, Kishanpur, and Pilibhit

activity icon

Search for Tigers on Daily Game Drives

Over the next five days, we explore the greater Terai landscape through Dudhwa, Kishanpur, and Pilibhit. We embark on morning and afternoon game drives each day, totaling to 10 safaris. Rather than being locked into one reserve each day, this portion allows for flexibility based on recent sightings, wildlife activity, and local tracker information - giving us a greater chance at spotting Bengal tigers.

Patience is a central part of the experience as we search for tigers, listening for alarm calls from barking deer or monkeys, searching for fresh tracks in the road, and scanning nearby trees for claw marks and other signs of recent activity. The anticipation of the jungle is constant. Along the way, we pause to photograph and observe the incredible wildlife that inhabits these forests, including Asian elephants, swamp deer, rich birdlife, and countless smaller moments that make each safari feel immersive and unpredictable.

After the morning drive, we return back to our homestay for lunch. Between drives, guests can relax at the lodge, review images, photograph birds up-close at a dedicated bird hide, enjoy meals, and prepare for the next day’s safari plan.

Drive to Ilam

Upon landing, the drive begins east through the Dooars and across the Nepal border into Ilam - a hill district in the Mechi Zone of eastern Nepal.

Ilam sits at an elevation that already feels high. Surrounded by cardamom gardens, old tea estates, and cloud forest where the red panda lives, the district has a gentleness that stands in deliberate contrast to the Terai left behind.

Check in and settle into the quiet atmosphere of the Himalayas, where the next chapter of the journey begins.

Red Panda Tracking in the Himalayan Forests

activity icon

Red Panda Trekking

Our search for red pandas takes place in the forests surrounding Ilam in Singalila National Park, where we explore bamboo forests, mountain trails, and remote Himalayan habitat alongside our naturalist guide and team of local trackers.

Before sunrise each morning, five trackers head into the forest to search for signs of recent red panda activity. After breakfast, we venture into the field, birdwatching and exploring the forest while receiving updates that guide us toward the most promising areas.

When a red panda is located, the group is carefully guided into position for a respectful opportunity to observe and photograph the animal in its natural habitat. Beyond red pandas, these forests are home to exceptional birdlife, dramatic mountain scenery, and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world.

The experience is intentionally slow, immersive, and rewarding. Evenings are spent relaxing around the campfire, reviewing images, enjoying local hospitality, and preparing for another day in one of Asia’s most remarkable wildlife regions.

Things to Keep in Mind

Wildlife Sightings

This expedition is designed to maximize opportunities for tiger and red panda encounters; however, wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.

Fitness Requirements

Guests should have a moderate level of fitness. The tiger safari portion is primarily vehicle-based, while the red panda portion involves walking on uneven forest trails at moderate elevations. Porters can be arranged upon request for guests who would prefer assistance carrying gear.

Weather

The tiger reserves are typically comfortable in the afternoons (70-80°F / 21-27°C) with cooler and misty mornings and evenings (45-60°F / 7-16°C).

The Himalayan portion of the expedition is significantly colder, especially in the early mornings and at higher elevations around Singalila and Sandakphu. Daytime temperatures are often around 40-60°F / 4-16°C, while mornings and nights can regularly drop into the upper 20s to upper 30s°F (-2 to 4°C).

Layering is strongly recommended, including a warm jacket, fleece, gloves, and comfortable waterproof footwear for mountain trails.

Cell Phones in Tiger Reserves

Cell phones are not permitted inside the tiger reserves. Guests wishing to photograph wildlife should plan to bring a dedicated camera.

Connectivity

WiFi and cell service are generally available in Delhi and during the tiger safari portion of the trip. Connectivity becomes more limited in the Himalayas and remote wildlife areas.

Domestic Flights

Domestic flights within India are not included in the expedition price. To simplify logistics, all required flights will be coordinated and booked on your behalf, with costs paid separately by each guest.

Laundry

Laundry facilities are limited throughout most of the expedition. Depending on availability, laundry may be possible at our Dudhwa accommodation before departing for the Himalayas.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended and should include coverage for trip cancellation, medical expenses, and emergency evacuation.

Visas

Most travelers will require visas for both India and Nepal. Guests are responsible for ensuring they meet all entry requirements and obtain the necessary travel documents before departure.

We recommend applying well in advance of departure and reviewing current entry requirements for your nationality before booking.
