Day 5 - Slea Head & The Blasket Islands image

Slea Head Drive, Blasket Islands, and Dingle Cookery

general icon

Slea Head Drive and Blasket Islands

This morning we drive the Slea Head loop, which many consider the most beautiful stretch of coast road in Ireland. We stop at the roadside crucifix above the sea and again at the Coumeenoole viewpoint, where the cliffs fall away toward the Blasket Islands. At the Blasket Centre in Dunquin we learn about the island community that lived here until 1953, when the last families came ashore for good. It is a remarkable story, and this small community produced more published writers for its size than anywhere in Ireland, several of them women whose accounts of island life are read to this day.
