Trip to Copenhagen

As a local of Copenhagen, I've had the pleasure of exploring every nook and cranny of this beautiful city.

Whether you're visiting for the first time or returning for another trip, there's always something new and exciting to discover in Denmark’s capital.

In this blog post, I'll share with you my top 10 favorite things to do in Copenhagen, including some hidden gems that only locals know about.

But first, let me tell you why Copenhagen is such a fantastic travel destination.

Why Copenhagen Is a Great Travel Destination

Copenhagen, the vibrant capital of Denmark, is a city that effortlessly blends history with modernity. It's a place where cobblestone streets meet cutting-edge design, and where centuries-old castles stand alongside innovative architecture.

The city is known for its high quality of life, friendly locals, and eco-conscious mindset, making it a welcoming and sustainable destination for travelers.

Copenhagen is also famous for its culinary scene, with a range of dining options from Michelin-starred restaurants to cozy cafes.

The city is home to world-class museums, beautiful parks, and a rich cultural heritage that includes everything from Viking history to contemporary art.

Plus, with its compact size and excellent public transportation, Copenhagen is easy to explore on foot or by bike, making it an ideal destination for travelers of all ages.

Now, let's dive into the 10 best things to do in Copenhagen.

1. Explore Nyhavn

Nyhavn, with its colorful 17th-century townhouses lining the canal, is one of Copenhagen’s most iconic spots.

Originally a busy commercial port, it’s now a lively area filled with restaurants, cafes, and historic ships.

Whether you’re looking to take a boat tour, enjoy a meal by the water, or simply soak in the atmosphere, Nyhavn is a must-visit.

2. Visit the Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli Gardens is a fairy-tale world in the heart of the city.

Opened in 1843, Tivoli is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, offering thrilling rides, beautiful gardens, live performances, and a magical atmosphere, especially during the evenings.

Whether you’re traveling with kids or just looking to enjoy some nostalgic fun, Tivoli Gardens is a place where everyone can find joy.

3. Stroll Through the King’s Garden and Rosenborg Castle

The King’s Garden (Kongens Have) is Copenhagen’s oldest royal garden and a popular spot for locals to relax.

The park surrounds Rosenborg Castle, a stunning Renaissance castle that houses the Danish crown jewels.

Take a leisurely stroll through the garden, and don’t miss the chance to explore the castle’s interior, where you’ll find treasures from Denmark’s royal history.

4. Cycle Around the City

Copenhagen is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world, and cycling is a great way to see the city like a local.

Rent a bike and explore the city's many cycling paths. Ride through the charming streets of the old town, along the waterfront, or venture out to the hip neighborhoods of Vesterbro and Nørrebro.

With bikes available for rent all over the city, it's easy to get around and see Copenhagen from a different perspective.

Considering a bike tour in Copenhagen is another great option for sightseeing while exploring like a local.

5. Experience Freetown Christiania

Christiania is a unique and self-proclaimed autonomous neighborhood in the heart of Copenhagen.

Established in the 1970s, Christiania has its own set of rules independent of the Danish government. It’s a place where you’ll find vibrant street art, quirky cafes, and an alternative lifestyle.

A visit to Christiania offers a glimpse into a different side of Copenhagen that you won’t find anywhere else.

6. Discover The National Museum of Denmark

For a deep dive into Danish history and culture, the National Museum of Denmark (Nationalmuseet) is the place to go.

The museum covers everything from prehistoric Denmark and Viking artifacts to modern Danish history.

It's a fascinating journey through the ages, with interactive exhibits that are great for visitors of all ages.

7. Enjoy the View from The Round Tower

The Round Tower (Rundetårn) is one of Copenhagen's most distinctive landmarks.

Built in the 17th century, this tower offers a unique spiral walkway leading to a panoramic observation deck with stunning views over the city.

Along the way, you can explore the tower’s art gallery and historic library hall, making it both a cultural and visual treat.

8. Wander Through The Botanical Garden

Located in the heart of Copenhagen, the Botanical Garden is a green oasis perfect for a relaxing stroll.

The garden features a large collection of plants, a beautiful lake, and historic glasshouses that transport you to different climates around the world.

It's an ideal spot to unwind and enjoy nature right in the middle of the city.

9. Visit The Little Mermaid

A visit to Copenhagen wouldn't be complete without seeing The Little Mermaid statue, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairy tale.

Although relatively small, this iconic statue has become one of the most recognizable symbols of the city.

Take a walk along the Langelinie promenade, where you’ll find The Little Mermaid sitting on a rock by the water, waiting to greet visitors from around the world.

10. Eat Danish Pastries at a Local Bakery

No trip to Copenhagen is complete without exploring the Danish food scene

Head to one of the city’s many bakeries and treat yourself to a freshly baked "wienerbrød" or cinnamon roll. Some of my favorite spots include Juno the Bakery, Meyers Bageri, and Andersen and Mailliard.

Enjoy your pastry with a cup of coffee for the perfect Copenhagen experience.

Conclusion

Copenhagen is a city full of charm, history, and culture, offering a diverse range of activities for every traveler.

Whether you’re exploring its historic sites, enjoying its vibrant neighborhoods, or simply relaxing in its beautiful parks, Copenhagen has something special for everyone.

I hope this guide helps you discover some of the best things to do in my wonderful city.
