About this trip

Begin this tour with a scenic 1.5 hour drive through rugged countryside past numerous villages along the Nam Xuang river. We’ll cross the Nam Xuang river by small boat and begin our trek from the river’s banks. The trekking is 4-5 hours easy to intermediate through dense jungle and across numerous streams during the wet season. There are both Hmong and Khmu villages to visit and overnight at. Your guides will introduce you to the villages, prepare dinner, and guide you through an unforgettable experience with your host village. Unlike the Lao Loum people predominantly residing in the city who are Buddhist, the Hmong and Khmu ethnic groups are animist with widely differing beliefs that make Laos the ethnically rich country it is. Ask to join any activity you see. Use your time and guide well to explore these remarkable people’s lives.

On our second morning we’ll wake to enjoy breakfast prepared by your guide, say your farewells, and set off again trekking for about 5 hours to the second of two rivers you’ll see on this tour. Feel free to jump in for a swim to cool off before you depart by minivan to conclude this incredible immersion tour. We’ll arrive back in Luang Prabang by about 4:30 p.m.

Itinerary

8:30 a.m. meeting, introduction to group and guides, deposit your luggage in our care while on the tour, and briefing on tour before departure. Begin our drive of about 1.5 hours north of the city, half along a paved road and then along an unpaved road paralleling the beautiful Nam Xuang River. We’ll pass countless villages through rugged mountains on our drive as you leave everything resembling a city far behind you. We’ll cross the Nam Xuang river by small boat and begin our trekking through dense old-growth jungle. The first day of the tour is largely shaded as we make our way to our homestay villages.

On this tour we alternatively visit and homestay at two villages, one Khmu and the other Hmong to reduce the impact on either one in particular. We will take a thorough tour of one and then homestay at the other so that you can explore both ethnic groups in these remote villages. Our guides will cook for you, help translate if you would like to talk with anyone in the village, and will inform you about any aspect of local life.

On the second morning we’ll wake for breakfast, bid our new friends well, and begin trekking about 5 hours through more open terrain so that we can take in more countryside. Parts of this trail are down a medium grade. We’ll arrive at a the Nam Pa River where we can take a refreshing swim before boarding our truck for a 1 hour return trip to Luang Prabang by about 4:30 p.m. thus concluding this memorable remote tour.

We had a wonderful 10 night trip in Laos with Manifa Travel. We booked our hotels ourselves and gave Manifa the dates and they then created our itinerary. Everything went seamlessly. The lovely Mong showed us around Vientiane and put us on the fast train to Vang Vieng. We were then met by the brilliant, and fun Toh who took us kayaking and cycling around the beautiful countryside, adapting the itinerary to suit our needs. Then North to tranquil Nong Khiaw guided by the charismatic and knowledgeable Latte. Our final destination was Luang Prabang where delightful and engaging Khane looked after us brilliantly. Our trip surpassed our expectations. Laos is an amazing country, as yet unspoilt by tourism, with stunning scenery and friendly people. Thank you Manifa travel.

Big Kudos to Ai Chit who made sure everything was right for us! The camp is clean, beds are comfortable and food is typical lao style on evening. Breaky is great too. We chose to ride elephant twice with the kids. Elephant are well cared for and look healthy. A great experience for the family!

Day 1 was a great start to understand the history of Laos. We visited historical sites and learned a lot in 1/2 day. Day 2 was a wonderful day- a float down the Mekong, a ride and visit with elephants, and an amazingly beautiful series of waterfalls followed by a quick swim. Loved every minute!

Our experience with Manifa Travel exceeded my expectations! The group of 23 was my first group of guests in PDR. I chose Manifa Travel by looking at the reviews of other guests. Nevertheless I was anxious about how the tour and the agreement be executed. First, the tour guides Ms. Mone in Viantiane and Mr. Latte in Luang Prabang were excellent local guide. Aside from very knowledgeable and professional, they did extra miles and services. They were very friendly and accommodating. Second, all the activities in the agreement had been executed and were executed well. Thirdly, we were impressed the works in the Mahout Elephant Camp. Aside from being a relaxing activity, it was also a heartwarming experience to be close with the elephants with the thoughts that these gentle animals are being well-taken cared of. The food which was included in the package were also satisfactory. I highly recommend Manifa Travel!

Amazing experience with the Mahouts and the elephants. The place to sleep is like heaven, you should recommend 3 days 2 nights! And the food really nice.
