About this trip

French Guiane is the neighbor country of Suriname on the north part and the smalles country of South America.

Also it is an overseas colony of France, where we have the baguettes and croissants.

French Guiana is know for the movie or book Papillon, The Devils Island and Space center.

A visit to French Guiane is recommended since you are in Suriname. We can do a 3 days highlight tour of the must see and do in this overseas colony. Going to Kourou or Cayenne and return is only possible by overland transfer.

Day 1

You will Depart Suriname at 7am for an apprx 3,5 hour transfer to the border city Albina in Suriname.

Here we have the border formalities and cross the river to St. Laurent by piraque or ferry. ( what is available at that moment)

From St. Laurent we visit the penal colony of France and the jail where Papillon was banned. This tour will take around 2 hours.

After this tour we will proceed to Cayenne and have a city tour of this historical site. After this tour you will be transferred to Kourou for the overnight.

Hotel 3* with breakfast

Day 2

Today we will visit 2 of the famous island by catamaran. We will depart our hotel at 730am to be on time at the pier.

The catamaran will take us after an 1 hour sailing to Royal Island. Here you will visit the island and have your lunch. ( Not included)

Around 2 pm you will leave for St. Joseph island, the 2nd Island of the 3. This is the smaller island and after the visit of the historical sites we will do a round sailing tour of Devils Island. You are not allowed to enter this island.

At around 5pm you will be back in Kourou and check into your hotel.

Day 3

We start the day with a tour of the space center. In this 4 hour tour you will visit the launch pads, the monitoring room and the assembly station from a distance. Kouru is one of the space centers that has a rockt launch every 5 to 6 weeks. The biggest one of its rocks is the Ariane 5 that can carry between 10 - 20 metric tons to the orbit. Almost 85% of all telecommunication satellites are launched from Kourou.

After the tour we will depart back to Suriname and drop you off at your stay.

The overland transfer Paramaribo - Georgetown was a very smooth trip. The driver contacted me a day ahead by whatsapp and called again 20 minutes before arriving at pickup. I left at 4.35am in a car with five (including driver), arrived in South Drain around 8.45am. Performing check-in procedures and leaving Suriname took around one hour, boat left 20 minutes late (around 150 people on board, almost only locals). Boat ride was some 25 minutes to Molson Creek, Guyana immigration took another 15. To identify the onward driver there were two easy measures: I had received the name of the onward driver, and this driver had a picture of me on his phone (sent by the driver of the Suriname stretch). Bus of 12 (including driver) was full after ten minutes and we left around 11.15. One small stop halfway to buy some food and drinks and arrived around 3pm in my Georgetown hotel. Easy transfer, worth the money.

We visited all three of the Guianas. The capital cities are different in architectural styles, with some historical sites. However, in themselves the cities are probably not worth the trip. The main attraction of the countries is the jungle, which we chose to visit in Suriname. We had a couple of days at Knini Paati and five at Kabalebo. Both sites were very good and provided lots of opportunities to see wildlife. The staff at both sites were excellent. The only negative of the trip was the performance of the tour company Travel The Guianas. The trip program was changed without any notification or communication and caused us some problems. We had no real issue with changing the itinerary, we can be flexible. However, the lack of communication and organization over the course of the trip was annoying, frustrating and detracted from the trip. I would not recommend using their services.

I changed the trip to the transfer from Suriname to French Guiana. The drivers on the transfer to Cayenne drove too fast..the one in Suriname slowed down upon request but the one in French Guiana did not. The ride was uncomfortable and i also had neck pain as a result. There was also a wait at the border as there was miscommunication and the second driver did not show up on time.

Dear Mr. Muris, Thank you for the feedback! As we have discussed we will make sure that that the way this driver in the French side behaved, we would not tolerate that and make sure we have our own driver again. The whole mis understanding of timing was because last moment you have changed your pickup time and you are aware of that.

Very different than expected. I booked I under the understanding we would be picked up form hotel at 5 am. Then I was told earlier maybe 3 am. By 9 PM the day before they changed it to 2 am. And then I got a call at 1 am that I would be picked up in 15 minutes (1:15 am) I had less than 2.5 hours of sleep. Driver was a cool guy but drove pretty fast. We hit bumps pretty hard on two occasions. Instructions were sketchy when stopped. Driver will say take your time and then after 10 minutes while we were still eating rush us to get on the van very persistently. At the end driver and one passenger when out of their way to find my apartment in Georgetown. Thank you for that. But communication can be be improved as to how flexible are the times and rules. Overall a good experience.

Dear Arturo, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you experienced. We work with several individual drivers to provide a hassle-free service, and it's unusual for us to hear about such miscommunication, so we really appreciate you bringing this to our attention. We always aim to provide clear communication about pick-up times and flexibility, and it seems there was a misunderstanding on this occasion. We’ll review the situation with the driver from that day to ensure it doesn’t happen again in the future. Our goal is to provide a smooth, stress-free experience, and we’ll make sure that the process is clearer for future travelers. We're happy to hear that, despite the challenges, the driver was able to assist you and that the journey ended on a positive note with the extra effort to find your apartment. We'll continue working with our drivers to improve both communication and the overall experience for our guests. Again, thank you for your feedback, and we hope to welcome you back soon for a more seamless experience.

I thought this tour was well designed and appropriately priced. I had a wide variety of experiences that ranged from seeing incredible natural landscapes to eating thoughtfully-made local cuisine to getting acquainted with the city centers in all three countries / regions. While I'm sure I could have managed to get around on my own, it was unbelievably reassuring to always--and I mean always--have someone to guide my adventure and tell me what to expect and offer knowledge about the various places. Managing the border crossings would have been the most daunting and, again, there was always a guide or sometimes several guides helping with that process. Furthermore, with the exception of the first night, I was in simple, clean accommodations which all had a lovely breakfasts to start each full day. I would highly recommend this tour.
