About this trip

Join one of our trips and enjoy one of the world’s most unique kayaking and wildlife-watching destinations. Tortuguero, a.k.a. Costa Rica’s little Amazon, is located on the northern Caribbean coast and is known for its extensive network of rivers, canals, lagoons, national park, and village by the same name. The area is accessible only by kayak, small boat, or small plane, as no roads lead directly to it. Tortuguero is among the first National Parks established in Costa Rica and is the largest nesting site for the endangered green sea turtles in the Western Hemisphere.

September and October are two of the best months to visit because of the weather, great paddling conditions, and opportunities to see green turtles nesting on the beach. Seeing this amazing, slow-moving turtle make her way from the ocean, create her sand nest, and lay her eggs can be genuinely emotional and overwhelming.

My wife and I had a wonderful kayaking trip in the Golfo Dolce. The guides with Sea Kayaking Costa Rica were excellent! They were very knowledgeable about the areas that we paddled- I especially appreciated the early morning (optional!) bird watching. They were safely conscious and had the ability to be flexible for our group- depending on interests and current weather and tide conditions during our trip. The guides had prepared all the details of the trip fully and we did not encounter any issues. The accommodation and food was exactly what we anticipated and we were quite satisfied. The fresh home cooked meals were tasty, healthy and with ample quantities. Highlights included amazing sunrises and quiet paddling waters. Corcovado National Park was excellent and we very much enjoyed the cocoa plantation and sloth excursions. Highly recommended!!

What an exquisite adventure! Mateas is a great leader, conscientious, caring, and able to pivot gracefully as unforeseen variables presented themselves, such as sea conditions/weather. San Blas is paradise.

Great trip! Our guide Jorge was knowledgeable and attentive. He ensured we knew what the next day entailed the evening before and educated us about the area and Costa Rican culture. It was fun staying in the Eco Lodges and you get used to no hot water as it is so hot and muggy. The hosts at the lodges were friendly and food was phenomenal. I wish I knew more Spanish to be able to chat more. Kayaking was incredible with calm water and stunning scenery. We were usually the only boats on the water except for a few fishermen. The added experience of visiting Corcovado and the kobo gardens was appreciated. Overall it was a great trip that I highly recommend.

The location was wonderful, with calm waters and interesting paddling destinations. El Chontal Lodge was great, delicious food and in a garden setting with birds and other animals all around. Lapamar Lodge was OK, a little basic but otherwise ok. It was disappointing not to be able to do the excursion paddling up the river across the golf (I know the morning tides weren't right but why couldn't we go in the afternoon instead). Tito was a fantastic guide, very knowledgeable on the country's social and natural situation. Mathias was incredibly helpful in providing information and making arrangements. Highly recommended.
