This is a 14km strenuous 7 hour round trip hike to the summit of Carrauntoohil between Sneem and Killarney on the Ring of Kerry. It is suitable for regular hikers only who will enjoy the the exciting challenge of taking a lesser traveled route via Caher summit to the top of Carrauntoohil, Ireland’s tallest mountain.
Choosing one of the lesser climbed routes to the top, we'll start our walk at 10.30 from the chosen starting point for the day. Whichever route we choose (and there are many – see here), the walk will be a strenuous one on rough track and open mountainside. It involves a height gain of approximately 900m which typically takes 6-7 hours.
This walk is for hillwalkers with good fitness. You can expect extended periods of ascents and experience of walking in this type of moorland terrain is expected.
This walk is entirely off-trail and good waterproof walking boots are essential. You'll also need suitable walking clothing, walking pole(s) and a daypack with waterproof overlayers, plenty of fluids, sufficient food. See more details of what to wear and pack below.
Scheduled walking experiences will proceed once two people have booked.
Private experiences are subject to minimum number of 3 or the equivalent in charges.
