Explore the Nabatean Sites Petra & Alula
We start our Arabian Adventure in Jeddah. This Saudi Arabian port city on the Red Sea, is a modern commercial hub and gateway for pilgrimages to the Islamic holy cities Mecca and Medina. Resort hotels, beaches and outdoor sculptures line the Corniche, a seafront promenade anchored by the iconic King Fahd’s Fountain. The city’s Al-Balad historic district dates to the 7th century and retains traditional homes built from coral.
Still Non-Moslems are not allowed in Mekka, but since a few years they are allowed to Visit the Prophet Mohammeds Mosque in Medina, where we head next.
The charm of the Desert draws us to Al Ula and the legendary rock tombs of Hegra - Madain Salih. The Nabataeans were a trading people on the Arabian Peninsula whose heyday was between the third century BC and the first century AD. Their centre was the world-famous Petra, which is listed as one of the new seven wonders of the world. The kingdom's wealth was based on the trade in spices and, above all, spiritually used resins such as frankincense and myrrh, which were supplied from the Orient to the Mediterranean region. The trade route along the south and west coast of the Arabian Peninsula at that time is known as the Frankincense Route. As the Nabataeans expanded further, they also left traces in Wadi Rum and founded the city of Hegra, which is located near the Alula oasis. An important junction on the caravan routes.
Wadi Disah awaits us: A spectacle of nature that in the midst of the mountains, interrupting the desert, has created this oasis with spring water where there are palm trees, reeds and lots of vegetation, an experience not to be missed and guided by locals.
