The festival was founded in 1997 to promote the music and culture of the Colombian Pacific.

In its 23 years of existence, it has become the most important Afro-American music festival in Latin America bringing together more than 1,000 artists from all over the Colombian Pacific, as well as from other countries and attracting over 1 million visitors during its 6 days of fair.

The musical genres presented at the festival include currulao, marimba, bunde, patacoré, currulao, socavón, among others. The festival also includes a gastronomic fair, an artisanal exhibition, and a varied cultural program.

Reviews

This tour occurred in August 2024. Juliana Medina, Impulse Travel, was the guide and coordinator. Gregorio Uribe was the musical guide/expert. Juliana did a meticulous job at logistics of details and looking after all the participants from lost luggage to flight delays, to an overcrowded Petronio Alvarez festival. Can't say enough good things about the logistics provided. The restaurants, musical artists and venues and unofficial activities all provided a memorable cultural immersion. It really helped to stay in luxury hotels as a respite from the heat. The hotels provided a recharge. This was a customized music and culture tour in conjunction with the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival Foundation. Would highly recommend any variation that Impulse Travel offers. Traveled to Cali and Cartagena on this trip.

It would be hard to describe this experience. It was like no others. The deep dive into the music, its roots, the dance, its roots, the food , and its roots is simply not saying enough. At every level, it was personal, entertaining, educational, and simply wonderful. It is truly a cultural experience like no other i have been on. Thank you is not enough. The guides and hosts were beyond expectation. Thank you for such a unique experience.
