Love takes off the masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within.
― James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time
A Vision for Black Joy is a participant-driven retreat. Together we will reflect on personal and community centered visions and experiences of Black Joy. By opening up a stimulating and fluid space for creativity and discussion, facilitators Christal Brown and Jaamil Olawale Kosoko aim to spark transformation, deepen the reservoir of joy and bridge the gaps in our personal narratives through empowering community-led conversations, ambitious thinking and critical embodied engagement.
Christal Brown is the Chief Visioning Officer of Steps and Stages Coaching Facilitation and Consulting. She blends her creativity, background in education, and spiritual insight into the practice of establishing, structuring, and implementing visions in the lives of individuals, institutions, relationships and families.
As the Chief Visioning Officer of Steps and Stages “Coach Christal” leads transformational in-depth coaching programs that help clients achieve new heights of success, meaning, and spiritual aliveness. Brown has been featured on NPR’s The Moth, Ted X Middlebury, as well as various podcasts and conference stages across the U.S. and Zambia.
Brown describes herself as a person with a servant heart and a workaholic mind who uses her gifts as a bridge to connect to and be connected to others.
Jaamil Olawale Kosoko, (they/them) of Yoruba and Natchez descent is an award-winning artist, poet, and facilitator whose work in embodied poetics and performance has been presented internationally and is rooted in the intergenerational passage of Black feminist knowledge, queer theories of the body, and sacred rituals of intimacy & wellness as a means to craft perpetual modes of freedom, healing, and care where/when/however possible. Their new book, Black Body Amnesia: Poems & Other Speech Acts was released in Feb. 2022. Jaamil is the recipient of a MacDowell Fellowship, Pew Fellowship in the Arts, Princeton Arts Fellowship, 2019 Red Bull Writing Fellowship, and a 2017 Cave Canem Poetry Fellowship.
