Medina Secrets: (an immersive cultural tour in the old town of Tunis):

A bustling and vibrant city, Tunis is the largest city of the country, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and offers a blend of modern and historical. Did you know that Tunis has 700 monuments? 

Founded by the Amazigh, their influence can still be seen today.

Narrow streets, palaces, mosques, and old buildings, Amazigh, Phoenicians Romans, Arabs and modern events... It all comes together during this day.

In the afternoon, on to another classical site: Carthage Archeological site and Sidi Bousaid. 

Carthage was one of the most glorious cities of the Mediterranean, once Rome’s rival. It is today a huge modern city as well as an archeological site and to best experience it we will visit through 6 major stops, linking them together.

We end the visits in Sidi Bousaid, a gorgeous town that stretches from the hill to the sea, and all made of blues and whites, .

Transfer to Tozeur, the capital of the desert (7 hours driving).

Why Tozeur? Because it is an oasis. What’s an oasis? It is a city in the middle of the desert. Surreal landscapes and palm trees under the desert light, a modern city that has developed around an old core, this will be a fascinating blend of modern and desert. After all, it is hard to forget that the Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world, and that it is everywhere around us.

Lunch in Matmata

A classic stop, a town that is also a filming set for many movies, Matmata is famous for its troglodyte homes, dug into the ground and connected with tunnels. It was actually only discovered in the 20th century… 

Stop at the Salt Lake Chott El Djerid: It is the largest salt pan of the Sahara and this huge inside lake is almost entirely dried up.

We will delve deeper in the Sahara and its Oasis and its sites. Local traditions and histories, along with gorgeous natural landscapes made of canyons, hot springs, and movie sets.

Road to Douz, the Sahara Gate (2-hour drive with no breaks)

Douz looks like its covered in snow. But it isn’t. This is the softest approach to the Sahara. The Amazigh, a nomadic herding tribe, lives in Douz, and they still go back to the tents once a year. And we cannot talk about people of the deserts without thinking of Camels.

This is one of our rare camping experiences. Though we usually offer at least 3-star accommodations, we couldn’t resist adding this specific experience. It is the Sahara after all!

Tataouine full day exploration 

The Amazigh – free men - tribes go back 20 000 years. They are spread in different countries in North Africa. They are believed to be the descendants to the hunter-gatherer’s tribes who lived in the area for thousands of years.

We will visit Ksours – abandoned villages, hidden away in dry mountainous landscapes. 

We will also enjoy the visit of something interesting: the geological past of Tataouine. Thanks to its muddy soil, dinosaurs’ footprints were fossilized – and we will learn more about which great ones lived in the area. Jurassic Park – revisited. Especially when we learn what recent discovery was made!

Lunch with the locals and discovery of southern Tunisian food

Sunset hike – easy. A must do to fully enjoy the landscapes of the area.

Back to the guest house, dinner & overnight.

Road to Ghomrassen (45 min) 

Bycicle tour or  an easy hike to a viewpoint, local market exploration or chilling at the accommodation) - lunch not included - suggest street food

Did you know that Millions of years ago, the Sahara was a green oasis covered in trees and grassland? One wouldn’t imagine that looking at the sea of sand today. And yet, witnesses of another age have drawn the animals that used to roam the land. We will see some of the paintings - the oldest murals of the human journey - in Ghomrassen, as well as other landmarks, before hitting the road again, towards Tunis. (7 hours).

Overnight and traditional dinner in the medina or on the way.

Right after breakfast, we head for a cooking class. 

Food is one of the most important social aspects of the Middle East and the Mediterranean. So what other way to end the trip then by sharing a cooking session?

Market visit and then some free time to enjoy Tunis – or possible visits to artisan workshops (traditional perfume making, old books binding or leather crafting)
