About this trip

For our overnight hiking trips, we choose one of the different mountain valleys located 1-2 hrs from the city of Santiago, for example, Maipo Valley, Yerba Loca, Farellones, or Aconcagua valley.

Yerba Loca Overnight Hiking Trip:

This valley owes its name to the Yerba Loca river borns at an altitude of 3900 mt at La Paloma glacier.

This spectacular area has been occupied by men since prehispanic times, in fact, more than 100 archaeological sites and objects have been found from 8.000 to 6.000 b.c

One of these groups that passed by the area was the Chiquillanes, nomads, hunters, and gatherers that moved through the Andes.

On our two-day hiking trip, on the first day, we hike 10-12 km to a nice campsite with the help of arrieros, which take our gear with mules. On the second day, we walk in the morning to the glacier viewpoint, have lunch, and then get down to the car.

I love snowshoeing and was very excited at the possibility of snowshoeing in August in the Andes during my trip to Chile! When I contacted Ecordua, Joaquin was very responsive, answering all my questions promptly and making suggestions for possible trips. I greatly appreciated his help in planning this (and one other) trip during my stay in Santiago. Both Joaquin and his wife came on this trip and I really enjoyed my time with them. We drove about 2 hours from Santiago. While I'm used to snowshoeing through forests this involved a lot of climbing at high altitude which I am not used to. But Joaquin kept a pace that worked for me. The views were beautiful and I really enjoyed the trip. If you like snowshoeing, or want to try something new, I definitely recommend this trip!

This was the perfect trip for my first day in Santiago. After an overnight flight I wanted something active to help stay awake and Joaquin suggested an afternoon half day hike outside Santiago. It was a great hike with beautiful views to the city. And afterwards Joaquin provided a snack of wine, fruit, and cheese-- a lovely start to my trip! Not only was Joaquin great company but it was a pleasure working with him. He was very responsive, listened to what I said I was looking for and then made suggestions. I very much appreciated that. I highly recommend this trip!

Had a beautiful half day hike up Cerro Manquehue with Joaquin, who is really a delightful guy. The trail is not always easy to follow, so I was very glad we had a guide. We had gone up the back side of the mountain because the front is where most people hike in from, so we had very few other hikers on our path. We managed to see a herd of goats running across the path, which we were not expecting at all but it was so fun to see!

We had an amazing time, Omar and Theresa were both lovely and attentive. The horses are well looked after and have a great stomping ground! We rode through the field where horses, mules and donkeys from multiple farms were out which was lovely. Good views from the foothills of the Andes too over the mountains and city. We finished off with a bottle of wine and lunch outside the stables and chatted for a long time. Would highly recommend, very personal experience, they made you feel like part of the family for the day, not “just tourists”. We also booked last minute (the day before) which is very good service to be able to accommodate us.
