About this trip

Considered Machu Picchu's "sister city," Choquequirao is one of Peru’s most spectacular hikes, with sweeping Andean vistas and even the chance to spot condors. Choquequirao sits high atop the Apurimac Valley, in utter isolation. You’ll be awestruck as you take in the beautiful natural surroundings, and marvel at the Incas’ ingenuity to construct such impressive buildings.

Choquequirao to Machu Picchu is one of the most challenging and spectacular treks in the region. This Peru trek connects one of the most famous Inca cities.

Starting in Chiquisca, we follow the Choquequirao trail down to the Apurimac River and then climb steeply back up again until we reach the ruins. After some time to fully explore as much of this incredible site as possible (it’s still only partially excavated!), the trek continues from Choquequirao towards Machu Picchu.

After two and half more days of hiking through beautiful mountain landscapes and past remote villages, we will drive to Lucmabamba where we will stay on Day 5. Lucmabamba is a semi-tropical area full of fruit trees and other crops, and we will have a chance to learn first-hand about traditional coffee making. You can also choose to spend the night in a homestay rather than camping!

On Day 6, we hike up to Llactapata for our first views of Machu Picchu – an amazing perspective on this World Heritage Site. After spending the night in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes, we then travel up to Machu Picchu itself on Day 7 for a tour of the Inca citadel.

Itinerary

Day 1
Cusco - Capuliyoc - Chiquisca - Santa Rosa
  • Total Walking Distance: 2 km
  • Total Walking Time: 6-7h
  • Minimum Altitude: 1520m (4,986 ft) / Maximum Altitude: 2970m (9,744 ft)
  • Altitude of camp: 2095m (6,873 ft)
  • Approx. night temperature: 8°C (47°F)

We begin our Choquequirao Trek to Machu Picchu with an early departure from Cusco and head towards the Apurimac canyon, surrounded by impressive snow-capped peaks. After about an hour and a half of driving, we will have a short stop at Tarawasi (2675m / 8776 ft).

Tarawasi gets its name from two Quechua words: tara, a type tree native to the Andes (latin name: caesalpina espinosa), and wasi, which means “house”. So Tarawasi is “the house of the Tara tree”. Tara is a multipurpose tree that produces large bean pods that turn orange when ripe. The seeds inside are used as a natural dye, and also have medicinal purposes.

Tarawasi is a ceremonial centre that dates to Incan times. One of the most striking features of this archaeological site is the presence of an usnu, a ceremonial structure where ritual offerings would be prepared.

From here, we continue by car another 3h to Capuliyoc (2970m / 9744ft). In Capuliyoc we have our first beautiful views of the Apurimac valley stretching below, as well as the snow-capped peaks of Padreyoc and Huayna Cachora. We will meet our muleteers here and walk about 15 minutes to have our lunch at the Capuliyoc lookout point. From here, we descend steeply 3-4h into the Apurimac Canyon, taking in the spectacular views until we reach Chiquisca (1950m / 6397 ft), with breathtaking drops on either side. An hour beyond Chiquisca, we arrive at the roaring Apurimac River (1520m / 4986 ft).

From the river, we begin to climb to the Santa Rosa Campsite (2095m / 6873 ft). This is a tough 2h climb but makes the next day easier! As the campsite is further along than the most popular camp, it is often quiet and you can soak up the stars.

*This day is flexible and so the route you trek might not correspond exactly to the route described here. Walking times depend on the time of departure and on the nature of the group. The guide may change lunch spots and campsites, depending on the progress of the group.

*Please take note that there might be biting insects on the trail, thus repellent will be needed! It can get very hot on the trail (not just in the canyon!), going up to 30-35 ºC (86 ºF – 95 ºF). It can get as hot as 40ºC (104 ºF) in the canyon.

Reviews

If you are seeking a truly exceptional journey through Peru, one that bypasses the crowds and unveils hidden gems off the beaten path, then Apus Peru is your perfect match. Apus and their entire team orchestrated an extraordinary experience that made our first visit to Peru unforgettable. We were especially delighted by our outstanding guide, Arturo. His depth of knowledge, meticulous attention to the itinerary, and vibrant personality made each day an absolute pleasure. Our driver was equally delightful—punctual, charming, and always ready for us with a warm smile. While some of the trekking equipment showed signs of wear and could benefit from an update, this minor issue did not detract from our overall experience. In fact, it is easily remedied and hardly a blemish on what was otherwise a flawless adventure. All in all, our time with Apus was superb, and I would not hesitate to use their services again or to recommend them to anyone seeking a unique and memorable Peruvian adventure. Serena M.

We just came back from a 7-day Choquequirao Trek ending at Machu Picchu (https://www.apus-peru.com/tour/choquequirao-trek-to-machu-picchu-7d). What an amazing experience it was! Peru is such a great country with welcoming people, mouthwatering food and ancient culture. Apus Peru made sure we had the best experience possible exploring it all! Starting with "getting to know us calls" prior to the trip and in person meeting as we were acclimating in Cusco, Apus team made sure we knew what we were getting into - one of the most challenging of their treks. They didn’t sugar coat anything and as such our group of 7 ranging in age from 11 to 62 was well prepared (an extra emergency horse helped provide peace of mind). The Choquequirao trek is magnificent. It takes your breath away - figuratively and literally - as it is one of the most challenging routes in the area. However, our guide, cooks and horsemen made sure we were well taken care of. Let’s start with horsemen - super humans always in a great mood, helping us start the days with coca tea, leading the horses and packing and unpacking the camps as we make our way. The cooks - Lenardo and his assistant - are super humans in their own way. They served us three meals and snacks and pre dinner tea with snacks daily. The menu was local and totally amazing and the presentation … well 5-star restaurant doesn’t describe it. Drinks, soups, main dishes we never heard of - my kids who are not fans of veggies and soups normally would gobble them up in no time. And finally our guide - Arturo! He was a gem! His knowledge of local customs and cultures, sites that we visited and families on whose land we stayed ensured that we had the best experience possible. He got to know the strengths and weaknesses of all 7 of us pretty quickly and would adapt the trekking time and speed to our abilities…. Or he made sure that we would never trek at the height of the heat unless it were necessary - which we greatly appreciated. He was very patient as some of us found our stride while the teenager kept up with the horsemen. I think he also might have his way with the condors as when we were ready to leave the valley - we saw one :). When you reserve a tour with Apus, you pick a certain category of hostel and hotel for the last two nights. Apus team made sure to pick good quality locations within that price range. What’s more, at the end of the trip when the cooks left, Apus picked amazing restaurants for our celebratory dinner and lunch at Machu Picchu. They treat you as a guest in their country and not just as a paying unit… Overall undoubtedly a 5-star rating to Apus for making sure our trip was such a success!

Incredibly well-thought-out itinerary that had us in unsuspecting places. Our small city tour was a great way to be introduced to Cusco. The Virgen del Carmen fiesta in Paucartambo was a fun experience (although with insight, we are better prepared for the next visit!). The visit to Casa Mantay was meaningful and it's an honor to be able to learn and help the community in our small way during our visit. The evening cooking class with the Choco Museo where we first went into market was a fun experience as well! Overall grateful for the ease of planning and felt very informed of schedules, expectations, logistics, payment, etc.

This was a very rewarding trip. The staff and guides from Apus Peru were outstanding in every respect, from communication before the trek to guidance and assistance on the trek itself. They were patient, professional, comprehensive, and prompt in answering all my questions. My guide, Marco, as well as the cook, horsemen, and driver, were all excellent. They were attentive throughout and made it a priority for me to enjoy the trek at my own pace and in a manner with which I was comfortable. The views on this trek were simply amazing. Due to flight delays I did not have as much time to acclimate to the altitude as I would have liked, but my guide took that into account and made sure I did not get over-fatigued or experience too much discomfort. I highly recommend Apus Peru for any trekking adventure.

The Ausangate trekking with Apus Peru The Ausangate trekking was breathtaking in every way! To hike at an altitude of around 5000m and camp in frigid temperature is not an easy feat but it was worth it. The majesty of the glacier was simply amazing. Also, I have never dreamed of seeing the Milky Way so clearly. Our group of four was assisted by Aggripino, Miguel and Juan, three hard working muleteers. Leandro, our cook, fed us great food fit for the trekking. Finally, our awesome guide Arturo was very attentive and knowledgeable. A unique experience.
