About this trip

This incredible tour, which begins in Glasgow, is meant for you if you want to be fully immersed into the Highland and Island culture for the majority of your time with us in Scotland.

Over the course of the 14 days we have the pleasure of spending with you, each of your senses will be entertained – you’ll see the landscapes that inspired ancient legends and historic tales, you’ll taste traditional Scottish cuisine such as haggis, cranachan, and whisky inspired dishes, you’ll touch buildings and stones built by people who lived hundreds and even thousands of years ago, you’ll smell the intoxicating scent of fresh highland and sea-scented air, and, lastly, you’ll hear the sounds of traditional Scottish folk music inspiring you to dance throughout our journey together.

On this tour we’ll go to the far north of our beloved country to see impressive white sand beaches with turquoise water, majestic glens and mountains, ride ferries across legendary waterways, dance with new and old friends, step back in time to explore historic villages, heritage sites, and of course some of the mystical standing stones and stone circles.

One of the highlights of this tour is a visit to the UNESCO site of Skara Brae, where you can understand the prehistoric life of our Scottish ancestors from over 5,000 years ago! Come along with us to experience some of the hidden gems our beautiful country has to offer on a magical, musical tour we hope that you’ll never forget.

Reviews

We had a very happy time in general. Wonderful guides, musicians, concerts, and travelers. However we had NO amplification any day on the bus. There were daily promises of solving the problem, but despite the fact that we were in Scottish cities, resolution apparently was not possible. The result of this problem was that the passengers behind the first two or three rows missed Duncan's dramatic stories and. history. These were pertinent, funny, dramatic and necessary for one's successful understanding and enjoyment of the trip. Something you can't prevent is that two of our friends developed COVID during the trip and had to be ferried to alternate sites. One of them had a disastrous moment at the Wingate Hotel where the sewer backed up into her shower. They moved to another hotel for their second night. The small hotels were very special, but hardly barrier free. Taking heavy suitcases up many sets of stairs was challenging. However, I had my 60-year-old daughter traveling with me, and she was very helpful. Sadly, I, the 89 year old, tested positive for COVID my second day home. Seems to be a relatively mild case, perhaps because I'd had two original vaccines and the new one shortly before the trip., This is not how I intended to spend my return home. Sadly, sometimes it seemed we were traveling many miles (beautiful countryside) to the next loo or eatery. I will have to try to identify the sites we visited as I review the itinerary and my pictures. Perhaps That may be attributed to age . Many thought the BBQ Bar was wonderful. I did not. It is the kind of place with thousands of empty bottles as decor, so it is difficult to keep from becoming grimy. Also, seating to enjoy the concert did not compare to the other venues, which were really special. Having dumped. all that negative stuff, it was a beautiful trip with engaging guides. I I truly enjoyed the guides (Fiona. Duncan and David) and the friends I made among the passengers.

Scotland Folk Tours do great work with Scotland tourism, wonderful guides and programs. But I found for there was little support for the music portion of the trip, or for the musician who invited the participants. (Nobody from SFT thought to thank me for filling up their bus with my friends and fans.) Putting the musicians and the travelers into a cold empty hotel conference room, without involving the public, and with not so much as a rented potted plant, was a recipe for failure for these nights they called 'concerts'. If you like guided tours of Scotland, you would have enjoyed this trip. If you are interested in the music, or you followed a musician here because you care about their music, you will be disappointed.

This review, written by a former musical Leader, is the single time in our company’s history in which Scotland Folk Tours vision, and the Leader’s expectations, did not line up. We employ the Leaders, and Darryl was, as he said to us, “wicked, wicked tired” as he started the Tour, and that was coupled with a complete misconception about the nature of our Tours and how they work. He informed us mid-tour, that he did not really like guided group Tours. Our musical Leaders are there to serve the tours, and we hope they will do so with humility and with curiosity about the Scottish land and its people.
Music is an important part of our foundation. Our tours are designed for travelers who love Americana/Folk music (including their tour leader’s music), but who are also curious and interested in learning about the long and rich tradition of Scottish music. Our Tours are “Led” by noted folk/Americana artists, and we make it clear in our itineraries that travelers will be treated to 2 scheduled private concerts by our musical Leader, and numerous evenings of music by noted Scottish artists. But, ultimately, these are Tours of Scotland, and historic sites and culture play a large part in the guest experience. We also pride ourselves in our Scottish guides— among the very best in the business.
Darryl is a former employee of ours, and his attitude and comments with some of his guests, also affected their experience. We’re sorry that that happened. I deeply dispute Darryl’s final comments, and I encourage you to read over all of our other tour reviews to see the full picture. We have many guests return to travel with us repeatedly, and we have never had another musical Leader make such complaints— most, if not all of our Leaders travel and work with us multiple times. We're sorry that Darryl did not understand and embrace our ethos, and we sincerely apologize to the small number of his guests who echo his opinions. - Tim Grimm, Founder/Director of Scotland Folk Tours

Probably a good tour, as far as organized tours go. We saw the Kelpies, Stirling Castle, Falkirk, Hadrian's Wall, Sir Walter Scott's home, Robert Burns' farm, beautiful heather-coated landscapes and other lovely Scottish landmarks. The bus we rode in was clean and well maintained. Our tour guide, Duncan, was exceptional. They kept us safe and fed us well at the various hotel restaurants. The hotels were average, nothing fancy but not too bad either. The hotel in Peebles had a fitness center, which was nice. However, I signed up to go because I was interested in experiencing Darryl Purpose's music in Scotland. His music, unfortunately, wasn't prominently featured. He was only scheduled to play two concerts for a 10-night trip. They also organized "local" musicians for 4 other concerts. Note that all but two of the concerts were held in hotel conference rooms with too-bright lights and uncomfortable chairs. There was no consideration for ambience. They also provided us with little to no information about the local musicians. My thought, before the trip, is that we'd be experiencing local music in pubs. Not the case, as all but two of the concerts were held in a conference-room setting. The last concert was good, we were at a restaurant that was reserved privately for us. We had a delicious BBQ and good music by a talented local musician, Beth Malcolm. She had a rhythm section accompanying her, which made the music really nice. Darryl Purpose, our musical "leader", made an effort to fix the situation, by hosting two additional concerts at the hotel during our free nights. These bonus concerts were enjoyable, but were done without any support from the Scottish Folk Tours organizers. I find it strange that they would market the tour as being led by a particular musician, but then practically ignore the presence of that musician. We collectively paid thousands of dollars to hear a seasoned professional play music for us, but that wasn't integrated much into the experience. The tour would have been immensely better had they scheduled Darryl to play 6 of the 10 nights. Be forewarned, if you sign up for one of these "musical" tours - you may not get the music you're expecting.

Our recent tour had its ups and downs, with some standout moments and a few disappointments. First and foremost, our guide Duncan was absolutely amazing. Not only is he a knowledgeable guide, but he's also a genuinely great person who enhanced our experience with his insights and friendly demeanor. The tours themselves were cool, offering a good mix of sights and activities. However, there were a few aspects that left us underwhelmed. One major issue was the Golden Lion Hotel, which was unfortunately subpar. The rooms were stinky, and the beds were uncomfortable, which made our stay there far from pleasant. The main disappointment was the handling of the musician aspect of the tour. Given that the musician was a big part of the tour’s branding, it was odd to have Darryl perform only a couple of scheduled concerts (plus the jam sessions that he himself arranged without the company's help). The lack of scheduled performances should have been clearly communicated before people are able to purchase the tickets. Moreover, most of the concerts, including those with local musicians, were held in cold conference rooms with uncomfortable chairs and limited access to a bar, which didn’t create a great atmosphere. That said, the final night was a highlight—held in a unique and cozy bar setting, it was the kind of experience we had hoped for throughout the tour. It’s a shame that this level of quality wasn’t maintained consistently.
