About this trip

Brazil, South America’s largest country is also the most biodiverse country in the world! Habitats range from coastal rain forest and wet pampas to montane cloud forest, plateau grassland as well as the great wetland of Pantanal. This truly is a must destination for nature lovers, explorers and birders alike.

Since it is impossible to encompass all of the diversity of this region of Brazil into a single short trip, participants and companions will dedicate this expedition to The Pantanal, the largest wetland on Earth, the land for best sightings of Jaguar, with more unique birds, reptiles and mammals, this is a destination no one should miss!

The Pantanal, largest wetland on Earth

Located in the heart of South America, the Pantanal in Brazil is the world's largest tropical wetland.  With approximately 42 million acres, the Pantanal covers an area slightly larger than  England and sprawls across three countries: Bolivia, Brazil, and  Paraguay.

The Pantanal offers any birder or wildlife enthusiast the perfect combination of great birding and mammal spotting opportunities! The habitat is one of the most birder friendly as it’s relatively open which makes birding easier and more relaxing.

It is one of the best places in the world to see the endangered and stunning Hyacinth Macaw, together with very good chances of seeing Harpy Eagle, 100’s of Jabiru Storks, Maguari Storks, Wood Storks, Herons and Ibises, waterfowl and literally 1000’s of Caimans, this together with excellent chances of seeing Jaguar, fantastic photographic opportunities and spectacular scenery makes a birding trip to the Pantanal a must!

We will spend over a week within the world’s largest freshwater wetland. During this time we shall travel all the way to the end of the famous Transpantaneira dirt road, about 145 km - 90 miles, well known for its amazing birds and wildlife. Once at the end of the Transpantaneira road we will spend enough time based at a lodge near Porto Jofre where we will take daily boat trips looking for various species of birds and our main mammal target, South America’s largest cat: the mighty Jaguar!

We then move onto the 80,000 acre - 32,374 hectare Chapada dos Guimaraes National Park for a further exploration, this Cerrado habitat (seasonally dry woodland and scrub) will provide us with a change of habitat, more stunning scenery and further opportunities for a whole host of new bird species.

Finishing our Brazil and Pantanal expedition, from Chapada dos Guimaraes we head back to Cuiaba Airport for international flights

I always feel it's good to have the Pros & Cons of potential destinations ! With Biotropica Expeditions there just are no Cons. Susie and Norby make expeditions wonderful and if anything untoward crops up, they deal with it with no fuss or bother. Their combined knowledge and expertise made our birding trips through Ecuador and Colombia magic. Susie loves the history and culture of the places we visited. Norby has endless knowledge of the birds and fauna. Susie also loves the flora and has a good eye for birdwatching as well. Saving up for Brazil and the Pantanal to do another adventure with this great duo. They have both become dear friends.

We went with Norby and Susy to Rumicucho, a significant archaeological site near to El Mitad del Mundo, not far from Quito. The site, which from the air resembles a man in profile, was used by the local Cocinqui people and the Incas. It was apparently both a fortress and a site of significance for important times of the year such as the solstices. On the solstice the setting sun shines through a gap in the hills on one side of the site, throwing a shadow onto the opposite hills and finally shining onto a circle which appears to be the 'eye' of the figure. Also evident is a very clear profile of a recumbant man in the hills near Rumicucho which may have influenced the way the site is laid out. We had a fascinating and informative tour with Paul, including a reconstruction of what happens during the solstice. Thanks so much for the experience! Highly recommended.
