About this trip

Panama Nature Jewels - Birding and Wildlife holiday in the Darien Tropical Forest. Starts in Panama city – ends in Panama city.  This birding and wildlife tour to the lowlands of eastern and western Panama fuses the rich diversity of tropical birds for which Panama is justly famous, with the classic atmosphere of a luxurious tented camp and a nice lodge. In the eastern side we will be quartered in the Canopy Camp, a reserve that supports sustainable ecotourism and preservation of Panama’s birds and wild places, including part of the Canal Zone and the Canopy Lodge in El Valle in the western side of the country.

Excursions, from easy to moderate effort

Besides the camp and the lodge grounds, with well established trails, we have short walks and a safari type vehicle in order to visit different roads with good forested areas, offering fantastic birds and wildlife sightings.

The camp opening affords a fabulous view of the surrounding forest and is bordered by Heliconia thickets that buzz with the activity of Pale-bellied and Rufous-breasted hermits, and the constant songs of White-bellied Antbirds. Planted stands of Verbena attract a variety of hummingbirds, from Blue-chested and Sapphire-throated to the dazzling Blue-throated Goldentail. Dawn brings great activity, birds deliver good sighting opportunities while their   sounds flood the forest, dominated by the screeching calls of commuting parrots, the yelping of Chestnut-mandibled Toucans, and the incessant croaking of Keel-billed Toucans, but sometimes also including the raucous calls of Red-throated Caracaras, the chattering of White-headed Wrens, and the whistles of Barred Puffbirds.

We had a fantastic trip with Norby and Susie. their knowledge is unsurpassed and they arranged for us to stay in some wonderful places where we could see an incredibly wide range of birds, flora and fauna. everything was arranged seemlessly and made for an unforgettable trip. i would recommend Biotropica to anyone who wants to see and know about birds in particular.

I always feel it's good to have the Pros & Cons of potential destinations ! With Biotropica Expeditions there just are no Cons. Susie and Norby make expeditions wonderful and if anything untoward crops up, they deal with it with no fuss or bother. Their combined knowledge and expertise made our birding trips through Ecuador and Colombia magic. Susie loves the history and culture of the places we visited. Norby has endless knowledge of the birds and fauna. Susie also loves the flora and has a good eye for birdwatching as well. Saving up for Brazil and the Pantanal to do another adventure with this great duo. They have both become dear friends.

We went with Norby and Susy to Rumicucho, a significant archaeological site near to El Mitad del Mundo, not far from Quito. The site, which from the air resembles a man in profile, was used by the local Cocinqui people and the Incas. It was apparently both a fortress and a site of significance for important times of the year such as the solstices. On the solstice the setting sun shines through a gap in the hills on one side of the site, throwing a shadow onto the opposite hills and finally shining onto a circle which appears to be the 'eye' of the figure. Also evident is a very clear profile of a recumbant man in the hills near Rumicucho which may have influenced the way the site is laid out. We had a fascinating and informative tour with Paul, including a reconstruction of what happens during the solstice. Thanks so much for the experience! Highly recommended.
