We leave at 4 a.m. down to the Saraguro hill where we can look for our endemic bird recently discovered in 2017. After 2 hours and a half of driving, we will arrive at the chilla mountain range that has rocks in the shape of natural arches. The hill is located over 3,700 meters high. (12,139 feet).
The conservation problem for this new hummingbird species is that the blue-throated hummingbird is already critical. The destruction of its natural habitat is destroying its ecosystem and food supply. It has to fight for its food against other well-established species and travel long distances every day to get its favorite nectar flower the chukirawa, which is only found in the Andean páramo. That is why a non-profit foundation like Jocotoco has created a new reserve in the Cerro de Arcos.
After this unforgettable adventure we will return to the city of Cuenca.
