About this trip

Join Jovinna for a unique weekend retreat on Lake Superior’s Madeline Island to wake up all of your senses, connect with Nature and attune your Body and Soul.  This retreat is designed to deepen our personal practices through Yoga, experience joy through Conscious Dance, cultivate peace through Meditation, and deepen our sense of belonging with the Natural world.

This retreat is for all levels of practice and abilities.

Activities

During our time off you may choose from a variety of optional outdoor activities such as kayaking, paddle-boarding, boating, hiking the woodland trails with a mushroom expert, or simply sitting by the big waters in stillness.  Or you might want to enjoy a cleansing sauna and a refreshing jump into the chilly waters of Lake Superior to rejuvenate the senses. As a special treat one of our dinners will be held at the indigenous restaurant, Miijis, featuring traditional food prepared by an Ojibway chef.

Jovinna

Jovinna began yoga, dance, and ritual practices since she was a child in a village in Singapore. Her love for movements and her reverence for Nature have led her to many forms of study in embodiment practices, Spirituality, and ritual makings. She spent 12 years as a performing artist in NYC and 8 years as a resident yoga teacher trainer at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in MA. With a rich background in creativity, arts, movements, and Spirituality, she curates and facilitates transformational programs that lead participants into a process of freeing any mental, emotional, and physical challenges to allow for deep healing and the feeling of belonging, aliveness and joy.

Madeline Island

Madeline Island is one of Lake Superior’s Apostle Islands, a collection of islands designated as a National Lakeshore Park located in north central Wisconsin. The National Parks describe the islands as “where water meets land and sky, and past meets present.” Madeline Island, the largest island, is also the spiritual center of the Lake Superior Chippewa, the Anishinaabe people.

How to get here

Driving

Directions to Bayfield, WI are easy on most map programs.

Most important to be aware of the Madeline Island Ferry Schedule at https://madferry.com/

On holiday weekends the boats can be full and it is good to arrive 15-20 minutes (or more) before the scheduled departure time.

We can try to connect you with other people driving from St. Paul/Minneapolis to coordinate carpooling.

There are several shuttles that will bring you to Duluth from the twin cities, https://groometransportation.com/services/  is one used by residents.

There will be a van pick up from Duluth to Bayfield at 4pm on Thursday night and drop off at 1pm on Monday if there is an interest.  Donation recommended $25.

Flying

For commercial flights we recommend Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport-MSP.

A shuttle from the MSP airport to Duluth is available and the shuttle takes about the same amount of time as flying, at a fraction of the cost.  https://groometransportation.com/services/

If you can book a flight directly to Duluth International Airport DLH, it is approximately 90 miles from Bayfield.

If there is interest there will be a van pick up from Duluth to Bayfield at 4pm on Thursday night and drop off at 1pm on Monday.  Cost $25.

Travel insurance is recommended, but not required.

I had an extraordinary time at the retreat. Jovina and Marnie were wonderful hosts. The location in the north woods was perfect for a yoga retreat. It was nice to meet so many new women of all ages. Food was great, yoga sessions were cleansing, and location fantastic.

I was so pleased to meet Jovena (and Tracy) after hearing about her yoga, meditaition and breathing teachings many times from Marnie. Wow--this was a wonderful 4 days. I learned to much and felt inspired to incorporate these learning into my life. Each day was perfectly planned--I was tired but not exhausted. My body felt stronger and more aligned and my soul was lighter. Thank you SO much. I look foward to learning and traveling with Jovena, Marnie and others in the future!

Travel to and from this location from CA required a full day; half day in the air and half day in a car (car ride plus ferry from the twin cities to Madeline Island-four hours) was well worth it. Accommodations: I stayed in the Sanborn House which had gorgeous views, easy water access, a dry sauna (which is especially fantastic if alternating with jumps into the cool lake if you're into that sort of thing), kayaks, swimming, a huge deck with comfy chairs, and a large screened porch for those sensitive to summertime bugs. Meals: I especially appreciate the care in supporting the local community with the food choices in both the catering and the restaurant. All but one meal was catered. Delicious, healthy, creative food. Convenient to have food brought to the Sanborn House between retreat sessions which left us with more down time to enjoy as we wished. The one meal out was to a restaurant specializing in indigenous food. Notable were the mushrooms and use of berries, all forged within a day of serving and venison was also worth a mention. Yurt: The newly built yurt was magical. Thoughtful touches like strung lights along the walkway leading from the parking lot to the yurt, a kettle to brew tea, a handwashing station that utilized captured rainwater, and outhouse that used an incinerating technology offered us modern day conveniences while remaining mindful of the land and our imposition on it. Jovinna: One of the most knowledgeable, skilled, open hearted teachers I've ever encountered. Sessions were varied between yoga, conscious dance, meditation, breathing, and discussions. For people like me who don't identify with one aspect or another (I consider myself "not a yogi"), the breadth of experience she brings almost guarantees every person will get something valuable out of the weekend while also having a chance to experience "peripheral" activities, too. For me, not a yogi, I was able to enjoy participating in an activity I don't usually do and, as the dose was relatively small, I was able to enjoy it for the benefit that it was without being overwhelmed. Because of the "retreat" aspect of the weekend Jovinna had freedom to make adjustments in time (shorter or longer) and content as our needs and energy levels changed. One day we moved our morning practice to the dock on the lake which gave us fresh morning air and sights of bald eagles as we did yoga. Breathtaking. It takes a very experienced teacher to plan well and know when and how to appropriately deviate from the plan to accommodate real time needs of a group. This is the third retreat I've done with Jovinna and no matter what the composition (age, gender, socioeconomic, education differences) of the group she has a sensitive way of bringing individuals together in a meaningful way that creates deep connections both within ourselves and between people. If you're looking to book your first ever retreat, this location and teacher are perfect. If retreats are your jam, this location and teacher are also perfect. High recommend in my book.
