Description CARTAGENA PALENQUE TOUR:

CARTAGENA PALENQUE TOUR

San Basilio de Palenque, renowned as the first free town in America, holds a rich history dating back to its founding by “cimarrones” (escaped slaves) in 1603. Emancipation was finally achieved in 1713. Consequently, this remarkable town received the prestigious designation as a UNESCO Cultural and Intangible Heritage of Humanity site in 2015. Additionally, it also clinched the top prize at the 2014 Gourmand Cookbook Awards in Beijing.

Our Cartagena Palenque tour offers an immersive experience that unravels the remarkable journey of enslaved individuals who, against all odds, escaped their oppressors. These brave souls left behind their ancestral ties and courageously settled in a town situated roughly an hour away from Cartagena. We learn about Benkos Bioho de Founder and one of the most importat characters in the afro colombian history.

Our Cartagena Palenque tour commences by diligently retracing the exact steps of the cimarrones, who were determined to break free from the oppressive grip of the Spanish colonialists. Upon reaching the historic San Basilio de Palenque, we embark on an enthralling walking tour. This immersive experience allows us to delve deeply into the customs, traditions, and distinct culture of this resilient community.

Importantly, it’s where the enduring African heritage still resounds through its streets. Furthermore, in our Palenque experience, we explore the unique Palenquero language, a brilliant strategy devised to elude their captors. Subsequently, we gain profound insight into the significance of the proudly worn braids by the native women.

To further enhance our cultural immersion, we enthusiastically partake in an exhilarating drum performance. This enlightens us about the profound cultural significance of this musical instrument. In addition, we indulge our palates by savoring the regional flavors through sampling local rum. Simultaneously, in our Cartagena Palenque tour, we relish delectable sweets meticulously crafted by the “palenqueras” (native women), who generously offer these treats to both locals and visitors alike.

Finally, by choosing our Cartagena Palenque tour, you not only experience this unique cultural journey but also actively support local businesses. Consequently, your participation significantly contributes to job creation for the Palenqueros, thereby fostering sustainable economic growth within this remarkable and unique community.

Our Cartagena Palenque tour is designed for those seeking a deeper understanding of Colombia’s rich history and culture. By exploring San Basilio de Palenque, you will uncover stories of resilience, freedom, and cultural preservation. Join us on this unforgettable journey and become part of a story that continues to inspire generations

We had a great time! Maria was knowledgable, kind and funny. Her love for the food and culture is evident. She’s well traveled and has excellent taste in food - we visited again some of the places she took us on the food tour. My personal favorite was the almost 100 year old place with the huge empanadas. Her tour talks not only about food but history, so it felt really comprehensive. Also, if you prefer to tour in English, she is fluent.
