About this trip

Join our December Cat Charity Walk, to help raise funds for the Mr No Ears Cat Haven's external project "Silves Street Cats".

I am organizing a fundraising walk to support the external project "Silves Street Cats" by Mr. No Ears Cat Haven's charity. The funds raised will contribute to facilitating adoptions and providing care for stray cats that cannot be re-homed due to age and disability. If you're interested in participating in this cat charity walking event, please secure your spot.

🐈 The charity project, Mr. No Ears Cat Haven, derived its name from a white cat in Albufeira who underwent ear removal surgery due to cancer. Funding for this operation was made possible through contributions from sponsors globally, including those here in Portugal.

🌡The organization operates in a manner similar to a hospice, specializing in caring for numerous cats dealing with severe illnesses and injuries. They offer love, creating a secure and joyful environment for these feline companions.

🥾I, Cheryl, will be leading the walk along the picturesque path beside the Funcho River. We'll traverse through pine and cork forests, eventually reaching the hilltop church. From this vantage point, you'll enjoy sweeping views of the rural Algarve countryside, known for its cattle farming and hunting grounds. Along the way, we might share the route with a shepherd and his flock of sheep, providing a unique encounter.

Covering approximately 6km in about 1 hour, this walk is generally moderate, with the exception of a 180-meter incline leading to the church. You have the option to skip this part and wait for the group's return. Additionally, there's a slope on your way back, just before reaching the entrance to the road leading to our destination, Figs on the Funcho.

☕️If you would like to skip the walk and join us for refreshments only then join us at about 11am

Refreshments, including coffee/tea and cake, will be provided following the walk. It's a chance to forge new friendships and connections in person. We also appreciate any contributions of cake donations.

Walking Details

🐑 🌳The out-and-back walk, starting from Figs on the Funcho, will follow the path along the river Funcho and pass through pine and cork forests before reaching the church perched on the hill. The hill top has bucolic vistas of the Algarve’s rural countryside where cattle are raised and animals hunted. The walking route is shared with the shepherd and as it is the lambing season we may meet his flock of sheep and cute lambs.

🐈‍⬛ Walking distance is approximately 6km and will take about 1 hour to complete. This is a moderately easy walk except for the 180 meter incline that leads up to the church, however, you can opt not to do it and wait for the walking group to return. Also there is the incline, on your return, just before reaching the entrance to the road that leads to our location, Figs on the Funcho.

🐈 Let Graham and Cheryl know if you wish to do a shorter version of this route.

Coffee/tea and cake will be served after the walk and you will have an opportunity to make new friends and connections face-to-face.

I had a fantastic time at the "Portuguese Spice Route: A Brunch Cooking Workshop en-route to India" at Figs on the Funcho, recently. Graham and Cheryl were excellent hosts, and the workshop was well-organized, interactive, and a lot of fun. The hands-on experience was great, with everyone getting involved in the cooking process. Our hosts made sure we all had the chance to participate, whether it was chopping, mixing spices, or cooking, which really brought the group together and made it feel like a shared culinary adventure. We learned how to prepare a range of dishes that highlighted flavours from the spice route—each with the unique spices and flavours from the regions along the historic spice route, from Portugal to India. The recipe selection was a perfect way to showcase the spices and ingredients from each region, and the hosts made everything easy to follow. I loved how approachable the dishes were—easy for recreating at home but still packed with rich, authentic flavours. The setting was another highlight. Their home and property are absolutely beautiful, and dining outside in the warm autumn afternoon with a view of the valley made the meal even more enjoyable. Sharing the dishes we all helped prepare while taking in the scenery was the perfect end to the workshop. I highly recommend this experience. Whether you're an experienced cook or just looking to try something new, it's a fun and memorable way to spend the day!

As I live in the Algarve I was allowed to join this trip on a non-residential basis, so travelled back and forth each day. Cheryl and Graham were wonderful hosts, friendly and welcoming. Always with a fresh pot of tea or coffee and the most delicious lunches each day. The house is pretty isolated, so if you are looking for a very quiet get-away, this is certainly the place to be. Definitely room to relax, meditate and get away from it all. I met the most lovely people from various parts of the world and they all seemed to love staying there. They certainly loved the early morning yoga and afternoon massages! The art course was just as described; an opportunity to experiment with various different mediums and techniques. It was fun to experiment and discover the effects, and we certainly had some laughs along the way. All in all, a great experience!
