Chef Ashley Boyd’s Festive Flavors Tour: A Culinary Holiday Expedition Through Croatia and Slovenia December 8th to 15th, 2024

Lovingly Curated by Chef Richard Gruica and The Gourmet Vacation

Embark on an extraordinary culinary holiday expedition through Croatia and Slovenia with the esteemed Chef Ashley Boyd of 300 East in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Chef Richard Gruica, the founder of The Gourmet Vacation on what we are calling the Festive Flavors Tour: A Culinary Holiday Expedition Through Croatia and Slovenia. This enchanting journey is a celebration of festive flavors and gourmet delights, set against the backdrop of the holiday season. The trip will start and end in Zagreb, Croatia from December 8th to 15th, 2024.

Our adventure begins in Zagreb, a city adorned with the spirit of the holidays, where we will immerse ourselves in the enchanting Zagreb Advent Christmas Market, where twinkling lights, festive music, and the scent of mulled wine create a magical atmosphere. We bet you didn’t know that the Zagreb Advent market won the best market in Europe a record 3 times in a row. We will also experience a walking tour of the city including the vibrant Dolac Farmer's Market, alive with the colors and aromas of seasonal produce.

As our time in Zagreb draws to a close, we will journey to the coastal regions of Kvarner and Istria, where the sea meets the land in a fusion of culinary excellence. We will explore the area’s rich history before indulging in a seafood feast at one of the top seafood restaurants in the country, overlooking the sparkling waters of the Adriatic Sea. We will delve into the world of truffles with a thrilling hunt near Motovun, Croatia’s prettiest hilltop village, followed by a visit to a charming distillery and a truffle meal high atop Motovun.

We will then cross into Slovenia and discover the capital, Ljubljana, adorned with holiday cheer, and experience its Christmas market along the river at Ljubljana's festive markets, sampling local delicacies and enjoying the season's merriment. Some of our other wonderful activities in Slovenia include walking the captivating Postojna Caves, a gourmet meal at a renowned sausage maker's establishment, and spending the day indulging with a wonderful chef at his Michelin-starred restaurant and farm.

We will experience the serene beauty of Lake Bled, with a picturesque boat ride to its island and a regal lunch at Castle Bled, as well as learning the art of chocolate making and master the creation of Potica, Slovenia's signature dessert at a rustic guesthouse.

Our journey will conclude in Croatia's picturesque wine country, Plešivica, where vineyards beckon. Savor wine tastings at a beloved winery and a meal high in the hills and relish a sweet finale with kremšnite a symbolic Croatian dessert, in charming Samobor.

Join us on this culinary escapade, celebrating the holiday season in these breathtaking locations, where every moment will be an expression of festive joy and every day will be one to cherish this magical season in these wonderful countries. We look forward to hosting you.

Please note- We kindly ask that all guests on Chef Ashley’s tour arrive in Zagreb no later than Saturday, December 7th as we have an early start on Sunday, December 8th.

This was my second tour with Chef Richard's organization, and I can say with certainty that it won't be my last. From the moment I signed up for this tour, I knew I was in for something special. Chef Bob's deep desire to know more of Irish food and culture, combined with his infectious enthusiasm, created an experience that transcended the typical tourist route. We ventured off the beaten path, immersing ourselves in the vibrant food scene that lies beyond the well-trodden streets of Dublin. The tour began in the bustling markets of the capital, where Chef Richard & Bob introduced us to artisanal producers, guiding us through the art of traditional Irish bread-making and the nuances of award-winning farmhouse cheeses. His insider connections opened doors to hidden gems, like a family-run distillery, hand-crafted knives, and farms that left our palates forever changed. As we journeyed westward, the landscapes became more rugged and the flavors more wild. In Galway, we savored the briny bounty of the Atlantic in the form of the freshest oysters I've ever tasted. We discovered the joys of farm-to-table dining, reveling in the perfect harmony of seasonality, provenance, and innovative technique. Throughout the tour, Chef Richard & Bob's unwavering passion for Irish cuisine and their deep connections with local food producers shone through. His curated experiences allowed us to peel back the layers, revealing the rich tapestry of history, tradition, and innovation that underpins this remarkable culinary landscape. I left Ireland with a profound appreciation for the country's food culture, a suitcase full of artisanal treats, and a heart overflowing with gratitude for the opportunity to be part of this truly remarkable journey. If you're seeking an immersive, unforgettable culinary adventure, I cannot recommend Chef Bob Cook's Ireland tour, hosted by Chef Richard Gruica, highly enough. It's an experience that will forever shape the way I approach and enjoy food. Don't miss out on future tours with Chef Richard's renowned culinary community. Sign up today to stay up-to-date on all the exciting upcoming adventures!

It is amazing how much food and activity gets packed into this tour without seeming super rushed and rarely getting up early. Hotels are top of the line. Food experiences are all unique and special and vary from home cooked meals on a farm, cooked by the farmer to Michellin starred 24 course adventures. Many excursions are off the beaten path and avoid the crowds while still accomplishing the "must-dos". The addition of amazing chefs sets these apart! Bob Cook is a super nice, very knowledgeable and extremely helpful chef!
