This Tropical Birding Break will focus on finding the Cherry-throated Tanager, one of the most endangered birds in the world with perhaps fewer than 20 individuals in existence that persist on forested hilltops in heavily fragmented Atlantic forests of south-central Espírito Santo. Our Venture begins outside Vitória where we hope to find rarities such as Buff-throated Purpletuft, Kinglet Manakin and Russet-winged Spadebill. Further north up the coast in the lowland tabuleiro forests of Linhares, we'll search for such iconic species as the Red-bellied Curassow, Red-browed Amazon, Blue-throated Parakeet and the Atlantic forest race of White-winged Potoo. The hills and remnant forests around Santa Teresa boast specialties such as Wied’s Tyrant-Manakin and Rufous-brown Solitaire which we also hope to find. From Santa Teresa we proceed to the Pedra Azul State Park, visiting a site for the endemic Serra Antwren. Finally, we will spend two full days searching the Caetés forest and neighboring reserves for the Cherry-throated Tanager.
