Travel Tips for Visiting Lapland

Best Time to Visit for the Northern Lights: To maximize your chances of seeing the Northern Lights, plan your visit between late August and early April. During these months, the nights are long, dark, and typically clear, which increases the likelihood of witnessing this incredible phenomenon. The best chances for aurora sightings are in northern Lapland, where the aurora can often be seen at least every other night. Even if you're only staying for a short period, you still have a great chance of catching the lights. For real-time updates on solar activity and space weather, check the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s space weather website to keep track of aurora predictions.

Weather and What to Pack: Lapland is a winter wonderland, with temperatures well below freezing during the winter months. The further north you go, the colder it gets, with nighttime temperatures in the north sometimes dipping to -50°F (-45°C). Here’s a detailed list of what to pack for the cold conditions:

  • Thermal Layers: Start with a good set of base layers. Thermal underwear (top and bottom) will keep you warm and dry, especially when out for extended periods hunting the aurora. Layering is key to staying comfortable in the cold.
  • Insulated Winter Coat: A high-quality, insulated winter jacket is essential. Look for one that is windproof and waterproof to protect you from the cold Arctic air. Down or synthetic insulation is ideal for warmth.
  • Thermal Footwear: Insulated snow boots are a must for walking in deep snow or icy conditions. Make sure the boots are waterproof and designed to withstand extreme temperatures. Consider adding thermal insoles for extra warmth.
  • Gloves and Mittens: Pack a pair of warm, insulated gloves or mittens. For extra warmth, consider wearing a thin liner underneath. Consider mittens for the ultimate warmth (you can still photograph the Northern Lights while keeping your hands warm by wearing a glove liner).
  • Hat or Beanie: A warm, insulating hat that covers your ears is crucial. Fleece-lined hats are a good option, and windproof hats are even better to keep the chill at bay.
  • Scarf and Neck Gaiter: A scarf or neck gaiter will help protect your neck and face from the cold, wind, and snow. A balaclava can also provide extra protection for your face if you're planning to stay outside for long periods.
  • Thermal Socks: Bring several pairs of thick, wool, or thermal socks to keep your feet warm and dry, especially since you might be outside for hours.
  • Camera and Tripod: The Northern Lights are an unforgettable sight, and you’ll want to capture the moment. A good camera with manual settings is ideal for night photography. Don’t forget a tripod to keep your shots steady in low light conditions. A wide-angle lens and a remote shutter release are also helpful to avoid camera shake.

Preparing for the Cold: When you head out to view the Northern Lights, the weather can be brutally cold, especially around midnight when the aurora is most active (typically between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m.). Be prepared to spend several hours outdoors, possibly in remote areas. The cold can be intense, so staying warm is essential:

  • Stay Active: Moving around will help you stay warm when outside for extended periods. However, avoid sweating, as it can make you colder when you stop moving.
  • Wind Protection: The wind can make the cold feel even harsher. Dress in layers and cover your face and hands to protect yourself from the wind chill.
  • Hot Drinks and Snacks: Consider bringing a thermos with a hot drink, like tea or cocoa, to warm you up while you wait for the aurora. Energy snacks, like nuts or granola bars, can also help fuel you through long nights.

Safety and Local Tips:

  • Stay in Well-Heated Accommodations: While exploring Lapland’s wilderness, it’s easy to underestimate the cold. Make sure your accommodations are warm and comfortable, offering a cozy place to return to after a long night of aurora hunting.
  • Dress in Layers: The key to comfort in the extreme cold is layering. Start with moisture-wicking base layers, add insulating layers like fleece or wool, and finish with an outer shell that’s windproof and waterproof.
  • Plan for Limited Daylight: In winter, the sun doesn’t rise much above the horizon in the far north, so expect very short days. The lack of daylight means more time for aurora hunting, but also means you may need to be strategic about your activities during daylight hours.
  • Be Prepared for Remote Conditions: Lapland is vast and remote. Many aurora tours and safaris take you to the wilderness, where services may be limited. Always have a guide or local expert with you, and make sure you know your way back to your accommodation.
  • Embrace the Local Culture: Lapland is home to the indigenous Sámi people. Be respectful of their traditions, culture, and land, especially when venturing into the wilderness. Sámi guides often lead Northern Lights tours and can provide fascinating insights into their culture and connection to the land.

Activities Beyond the Northern Lights: While chasing the aurora is a primary attraction, Lapland offers plenty of other activities to enjoy in winter:

  • Husky Safaris: Take a thrilling husky ride through the snowy forests.
  • Snowmobiling: Explore Lapland’s pristine wilderness on a snowmobile adventure.
  • Reindeer Sleigh Rides: Experience the serene beauty of Lapland on a traditional reindeer sleigh ride.
  • Ice Fishing and Ice Hotels: Try your hand at ice fishing or visit one of the famous ice hotels.

By following these tips, you’ll have a memorable and safe trip to Lapland, Finland, where you can enjoy both the natural wonders and rich culture of this magical winter destination.

I met Amy who planner of the Walker Wellness Retreat three years ago in Puru trip. I was very impressed with everything she planned. I am more than satisfied with this trip to New Zealand and Sydney. A beautiful varied adventure of both the North and South Islands of NZ and Sydney, AUS. Amy so creatively put this trip together and balanced days of hiking, nature, cultural experiences and wine tasting. We stayed in stunning locations, truly each hotel was wonderful and gave us independence to be a hub as we explored on our own as well. This trip far exceeded our expectations!

Amy at Walker Wellness Retreats helped us create a 2-week dream itinerary through Egypt - from Cairo to Luxor - with a final stop in Petra (Jordan). The trip was unforgettable, and the partnership with the exceptional local team (Your Egypt Tours) was seamless. Responsive and flexible, we appreciated all the help in making the trip happen.

I went on the most fantastic hiking and yoga retreat in Sedona with Brian and Amy. Looking at the photos taken with our group, the trails hiked, the yoga sessions, and especially the food eaten, it's challenging to put in words a review that will ensure anyone considering going on a trip with Walker Wellness will have a magnificent time. I guess two words, no worries! No worries about anything! How do you get there? What do you wear? What will you be eating? What are the details of what you'll be doing? Do they give you enough time to hike if you are a slow hiker? Brian and Amy have thought of EVERYTHING. I did not need or want anything. Right down to the particular cream in my daily coffee. (Thank you, Amy!) And if, along the way, you would like something, a little Starbucks coffee stop and a little shopping, all good. Brian and Amy are there for you. This is not a must-stick to the schedule type of people. They are there to make sure you have a wonderful time in Sedona. Two words: NO WORRIES!

The trip to Senalala Safari Lodge was a daily wonder and outstanding experience. Every bush drive brought unexpected wildlife experiences. Lisa, our guide, had phenomenal knowledge of all the sites, sounds and tracks that we saw each day. Our accommodations were very comfortable, well maintained and staff members made all welcome. I especially like eating the delicious meals family style and getting to know other explorers. I will return!🦒🐘🐃🦓🦏
