About this trip

Eastern Andes and the Amazonian Rock Art

Our multiple life zone journey begins in the capital city of Bogota, Colombia.  Before we head to the highlands we visit the Montserrat observatory, the Paloquemado open air market where flowers, fruits and vegetables create a kaleidoscope of color, shapes and fragrances to delight the senses.  We finish our days visiting the famous Gold Museum in Bogota where one of the most stunning collections of art, gold statues and historical pieces reside from many civilizations before the Spanish Conquistadores arrived.  This is truly one of the most impressive museums in all of South America!

Prepare for an exhilarating expedition into the heart of Colombia's Eastern Andes, where you'll uncover the secrets of the páramo - a unique ecosystem that has evolved in splendid isolation. As you ascend above the treeline, you'll find yourself thrust into a world that defies expectation. The páramo's sweeping valleys, jagged mountains, and crystal-clear lakes create a landscape that's both alien and awe-inspiring. This isn't just a feast for the eyes; it's a crucial "water factory" that plays a vital role in the region's ecology.

Keep your wits about you as you traverse this rugged terrain, for you're in the domain of the spectacled bear - South America's only bear species. These elusive creatures are fighting a losing battle against deforestation, climate change, and habitat loss, making every sighting a rare privilege.

But the adventure doesn't end there. As you descend into the misty realms of the cloud forest, a photographer's paradise unfolds before you. Here, amidst the ethereal fog and lush vegetation, you'll have the chance to capture the vibrant beauty of hummingbirds in flight. These tiny, iridescent marvels flit from flower to flower with impossible speed, challenging your skills and equipment to the limit.

Set up your gear in strategic locations near flowering plants or feeders, and prepare for stunning photos! The cloud forest's diffused light creates ideal conditions for photography, softening harsh shadows and bringing out the rich colors of the hummingbirds' plumage. With a bit of luck and a steady hand, you might freeze the beating of their wings, capturing the very essence of these aerial acrobats.

Your journey will take an even more thrilling turn as you fly from the Andes to the vast Orinoco savannas and the lush Amazonian rainforest. Here, you'll encounter the ancient wonder of Serranía La Lindosa - a rock formation so old it rivals the very foundations of the Earth. Part of the Guayana rock shield, these weathered cliffs hold a secret: one of the world's largest galleries of prehistoric art, dating back an astonishing 12,000 years that cover kilometers of rock walls (not a typo!)

As you navigate the banks of the Guayabero River, straddling the border between Meta and Guaviare, prepare to be amazed. Hidden within the verdant embrace of the Amazonian rainforest, thousands of images await discovery. Fish, lizards, birds, and dancing figures leap from the rock faces, silent witnesses to millennia of human history.

From the windswept heights of the páramo to the humid depths of the cloud forest, this journey promises to push your boundaries, challenge your perceptions, and reward you with memories and photographs - worthy of a lifetime of explorations.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival to Bogota, Colombia (El Dorado Int'l. Airport)

Upon arrival at Bogota's El Dorado International Airport, you will proceed through immigration and customs. After retrieving your bags, your driver will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to visit Monserrate, a sanctuary perched atop one of Bogota's many surrounding hills.

The sanctuary of Monserrate, visible from almost anywhere in the city, is situated at 3,172 meters above sea level, at the summit of Monserrate or Cerro de Las Nieves. Devotees ascend an almost two-mile path to this traditional pilgrimage site, which began in 1620 with the shrine of Our Lady of Monserrate. The basilica houses the image of the Fallen Lord of Monserrate, an effigy of Christ believed by the faithful to perform miracles. At the top, visitors can walk the Stations of the Cross. The sanctuary was completed in 1920 and is accessible by funicular and cable car.

In the evening, join the group and your tour leader for a meet-and-greet welcome dinner.  A specific dinner time will be announced closer to your tour date.
