This adventure on the Cotopaxi National Park day tour from Quito will start with a scenic drive through the unique Andean landscape in the Avenue of the Volcanoes. On the way to Cotopaxi National Park, the guide will explain several interesting facts about the area, and we will have a stop for a delicious breakfast. Once in the national park, we will go to the Cotopaxi Ranch. This is the only private property inside the park. From there, we will ride for around 3 hours in beautiful paramo areas over 4,000 m (13,123 ft). With this altitude, it is important for you to be prepared. We recommend acclimatising for at least 2 days around 3,000 m (9,843 ft). After a 2-hour horseback ride, the guide will pick you up again. We will head out of the national park and have lunch, before driving back to Quito.

We had a wonderful time at the Waita Lodge. Our guide was thoughtful and knowledgeable, and we enjoyed the mix of activities available to us. The food was very good as well, and they provided plenty of snacks, which is helpful when traveling with children. Our main issue was the transportation issue; we were given the option of having a private van versus a shuttle bus. We chose the shuttle bus, but were not informed of the constraints of this option. We were asked repeatedly during the weekend how we were going to handle the departure to the shuttle, which was not something I understood to be our responsibility. We were told that it would cost another $40 to reach the shuttle, which had to be paid in cash, and resulted in us having less money available for tips. Ultimately, the company paid for the price of the shuttle, but it significantly affected our travel on the last day. We were also not given a lunch on the last day, which meant that we did not eat between breakfast and dinner; there was no time to eat between getting off the canoe, into a mixto, and then the shuttle bus.
