Trip Highlights

The Deep Hole area off Ventura County Line offers awesome boat diving on the deeper outer reefs for lobsters. This area is further by boat than Anacapa Island and, therefore often overlooked. Join CIDA on this trip for something different!

The focus of this trip to the Depp Hole area is lobsters. Depending on the conditions, we might be drift-diving to maximize our time in the water.  The Deep Hole/Neptune’s/County Line area is about 20 miles south of Ventura Harbor (15 from Channel Islands Harbor) with the main dive sites ½-1 mile offshore and some deeper sites extending further out. Another name for the Deep Hole area is the “depot” because supposedly, it was created using concrete rubble from an old railroad depot.

This area is large and very dramatic and comprises large boulders, small rock piles, rock walls, rocky reefs, and pinnacles. There are deeper sites (70′-80′) such as Sea Fans and Sweet Spot, and there is a shallower (40’-60’) spot called “The Ring” with its rocky reef and kelp forest that can rival any spot on the islands on a good day along with an awesome site very close to the ring called “Towers”. The main dive area has depths ranging from 40′ to 100’, and there are other unexplored areas out towards 150′ and beyond! Depending on the time of year, the visibility can be from 10’-50’.

The Neptune’s area can be excellent for spearfishing and lobster diving. There is sheepshead and lots of large barred sand bass swimming around the rocky reefs, kelp (not as much out deeper), scallops, lobsters, and lots of invertebrates, so you can see why this area can be so special and without the diving pressure, the islands get. This area is more like what California diving used to be!

This trip is best suited for

Advanced divers and above that have experience in cold water conditions including; current, swell, possible limited visibility and deep water. Most importantly, good buoyancy control is needed and surface signal tubes are always recommended.

The Boat

The DV Triton is 40′ x 12′ in size and set up for only six divers. It’s a new-to-dive trips around the Channel Islands, local wrecks, and awesome coastal diving, and gives divers choices they never had before. The owner of the DV Triton, Danny Graham, has been diving for years as a recreational, Tech and rebreather diver. A few years back, he went from working for Nuvair to owning a boat doing commercial urchin diving and removing old nets and lobster cages. Mid 2023 Danny received his captain’s license and license to operate the boat for six divers. Now, Danny can operate the boat for a multitude of work and keep doing what he loves.  If you are an Experienced Advanced Diver or above and are looking for something different than the usual diving, the DV Triton is for you.

Where the Triton lacks creature comforts, it makes up for it with speed, tank fills, and the ability to do things and dive locations you can not with other dive operators. For tank fills, there is a 3500 PSI compressor with banked 35% Nitrox and the ability to do custom Nitrox mixes and supply 100% 02. It is best to bring your tank full for the first dive, and then for the second and third dives, you can get Nitrox fills for free. Read more about the DV Triton HERE.

Scuba trips to the Channel Islands for the experienced diver are our specialty. We run trips to wrecks, oil rigs & coastal offshore reefs and offer warm & cold water dive vacations. We don’t have a dive shop, and we are not a club, but we have been putting on some AWESOME trips since 2008.

GREAT trip! Basically a private charter with personalized attention and pleasant captain. We went diving on outer reefs in Malibu that were pristine and full of life. Nitrox fills all day was a plus! Safe, fast, fun... new sites... I'll be back!

As usual, Kens's trip to Santa Cruz was terrific. Very well organized, had great people, a great boat, and the diving was incredible - Visibility best I have ever experienced in California. Flame Reef is a terrific site, a bit deeper them some great kelp and marine life. Lots of topography. I didn't see them there was a Mola and a Giant sea bass Hanging around.I will definitely go on more of Kens Dive trips
