Notes

Ethiopia is a fascinating country and we have put together a great program with an experienced local partner. Note, however, that it is a country very different to the one you are living in and many aspects of daily life.

Cultural Etiquette

Ethiopia is a country with deep-rooted traditions and a rich cultural heritage. Respect local customs by dressing modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. Be prepared for warm hospitality and a strong sense of community.

Language

Amharic is the official language, but English is widely spoken in major cities and tourist areas. Learning a few basic Amharic phrases can enhance your experience and show respect to the locals.

Health and Safety

  • Vaccinations: Check with your healthcare provider for recommended vaccinations before traveling.
  • Water: Drink bottled or filtered water to avoid waterborne illnesses.
  • Altitude Sickness: Some areas, like the Simien Mountains, are at high altitudes. Take it slow and stay hydrated to acclimatize.

Currency and Payments

The Ethiopian Birr (ETB) is the local currency. Major cities have ATMs, but it's wise to carry some cash, especially in rural areas. Credit cards are accepted in some hotels and restaurants, but not everywhere.

Transportation

Expect a mix of modern and traditional modes of transportation. Domestic flights are common for long distances, while buses, minibusses, and taxis are used for shorter journeys. Be prepared for varying road conditions outside major cities.

Vegan Cuisine

Ethiopia is a haven for vegan travelers, with a wide variety of plant-based dishes. Traditional meals often include injera (a sourdough flatbread) accompanied by an array of lentil and vegetable stews. Embrace the local dining customs, like eating with your hands from a shared plate.

Climate

Ethiopia's climate varies by region and altitude. Pack layers to accommodate different temperatures, and bring a rain jacket if visiting during the rainy season (June to September).

Local Markets and Bargaining

Visiting markets like Merkato in Addis Ababa can be an exciting experience. Bargaining is common, so be prepared to negotiate prices. It's a great way to interact with locals and find unique souvenirs.

Animals

As part of our program, we will visit markets where live animals are present - these animals are usually for sale and it can be a disturbing sight to western travelers.

Connectivity

Internet access can be inconsistent, particularly outside urban areas. Consider purchasing a local SIM card for better connectivity during your stay.

By understanding and respecting these aspects, you'll be well-prepared to fully enjoy your Ethiopian adventure.

Verena curated a wonderful weekend experience. The variety and quality of food was amazing. I was especially pleased that most dining was family style with opportunities to taste and savor many dishes. I highly recommend this tour for exploring NYC.

I loved this Berlin-Prague-Vienna vegan food tour with Verena! Verena is an amazing host who takes the time to make sure each day is balanced so you get to know each city without being overwhelmed. The restaurants were well thought out and delicious! Verena is also very warm and caring, which makes it feel like you are vacationing with a friend. I will definitely do another travel vegan food tour with her. I highly recommend her and her tours!

This was an excellent trip! Verena, our guide, took us to experience creative vegan food off the beaten path. She had a nice mixture of free time and structured activities too. Would recommend.
