About this trip

Hemmed in by the Caribbean and Pacific Oceans, Guatemala is peppered with volcanoes, jungles, colorful villages and world class Mayan ruins. This tour celebrates the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Latin America’s most diverse country while exploring the challenges locals face today. We’ll learn about the 36 year Civil War from those who witnessed it, visit coffee farms and learn first-hand of heroic efforts to help Guatemalans escape the cycle of poverty. We’ll also spend a full day exploring the Mayan ruins of Tikal, explore dreamy Lake Atitlán and savor the colonial capital city of Antigua.  All proceeds from every Guatemala tour will go to Global Visionaries and Safe Passage, two excellent charities working in Guatemala.

Itinerary

Day 1  Antigua
Welcome to Guatemala
We’ll meet at our hotel in the afternoon, go for an orientation walk in Guatemala’s historic capital, and have dinner together.
Hotel Eterna Primavera (3 nights) https://hoteleternaprimaveraantigua.com-hotel.com/en/

Day 2  Antigua
Walking Tour Antigua
We’ll devote our day to exploring beautiful Antigua, a UNESCO world heritage site of pastel colored buildings where volcanoes loom in the distance around every corner. Our day begins with a guided walking tour during which we’ll explore the town’s Spanish colonial architecture and learn about Antigua’s tragic history and unlikely rebirth. You’ll be free this afternoon and evening to explore on your own.

Day 3  Antigua
Education; Volcanoes; Coffee
Our day starts with a stop at a rural school where we’ll share a snack and conversation with locals and understand the importance of education to ending the cycle of poverty in countries like Guatemala. Next, we’ll take a ride up the side of the Volcan Agua to meet with coffee farmers and learn about the fascinating process of coffee farming and production.   We’ll pick beans, have a late picnic lunch, and observe the production process at a family business.  We’ll meet the owners, try our hand at roasting, and taste the final product. Dinner will be at the home of a Guatemalan family.

Day 4  Lake Atitlan
Highlands; Civil War Talk
We’ll bid farewell to Antigua and set out for Guatemala’s highlands where Mayan culture rules. After checking into our Lake Atitlan hotel we’ll have dinner together.  Afterwards, we’ll learn about the long Guatemalan Civil War from our host who worked for the United Nations during the conflict.
Hotel Atitlan (2 nights) https://www.hotelatitlan.com/

Day 5  Lake Atitlan
Lake Cruise; Weaving Coop; Women’s Issues
Let’s devote this day to explore the magnificent lake and lakefront villages. We’ll visit a weaving cooperative while learning about the importance of this Mayan art form and its impact for women in particular. We’ll return to our hotel with time to savor its view terrace and pool before dinner together at our hotel. After dinner our hostess, who works as a human rights attorney, will discuss contemporary women’s issues.

Day 6  Flores
Today is primarily a travel day. After a free morning we’ll drive over the hills and through valleys to Guatemala City’s airport where we’ll catch a flight to the island city of Flores in northern Guatemala - gateway to Tikal.  We will have an early dinner together so that we can wake early for tomorrow’s big day.
Hotel Isla de Flores (2 nights) https://hotelisladeflores.com/

Day 7  Flores
Tikal
Today is devoted to exploring the magnificent ruins of Tikal. A local guide will join us as we drive into the jungle to Tikal, home to the most spectacular Mayan temples in the Americas.  Our guide will explain the howler monkeys and other fauna we’ll encounter on our walk to the astonishing site of Tikal, once the most important city in Mayan civilization. After a guided walk among the ruins, you’ll have ample free time to explore and photograph on your own. We’ll drive back to the gentle town of Flores this afternoon and enjoy a peaceful late afternoon and evening. You’ll be free for dinner tonight.

Day 8  Guatemala City
Garbage Dump; School Visit
A morning flight returns us to Guatemala City.  We’ll visit the city’s infamous garbage dump from which thousands of people make a living through scavenging. We’ll witness some of Central America’s worst poverty, but be inspired with a visit to a school, funded by Safe Passage, for the scavengers’ children.  We’ll return to our hotel for some free time before celebrating our experiences at a final dinner together.

We at Imprint Tours believe travel broadens horizons, introduces new ways to see the world, equips us with a new frame of reference for evaluating our own society, breaks down prejudice, and promotes global understanding. Therefore, we endeavor to “Travel with Intent”: an intention to take a reflective, introspective approach; connect with the cultures we visit; and balance the enjoyment of discovery with responsible travel. We want our “imprint” on the planet to be light and our “imprint” on the local culture to be positive.

Reviews

This trip completed a 15-year bucket list travel dream. We were thrilled to find that Imprint tours would again be offering this combination trip. We were exceptionally pleased with the wide variety of sites and experiences included, which provided a well-rounded experience. We felt safe at all times. The experience of other cultures can be uncomfortable at times, but in our minds, this is what makes a travel experience authentic. Imprint tours provided an organized, detailed, engaging tour. But the true talent of Imprint is the ability and willingness to pivot when plans do not go as expected. In travel that happens, and it is the true professional who cares about their participants who can quickly swivel and provide an equal or better experience. This is where Imprint shines. This small travel company deserves 5 stars for caring for clients.

Fantastic trip! Our tour guide, Reid, is so knowledgeable about history and shared great information throughout the tour. The sites, the views, the food, and our travel group were amazing.

Fantastic tour. Reid was an excellent tour guide. The expert guides at the various locations were also very good, especially the ones in Athens, Epidaurus, Delphi, and Olympia. My friend and I arrived 2 days early and stayed at the tour hotel in Athens. It was in a convenient location, had an outstanding breakfast, and a helpful staff. We appreciated the informal history presentations by Reid on the bus, and the regularly scheduled restroom breaks. I think Imprint Tours attracts seasoned travelers who understand the importance of staying on a schedule and following instructions when traveling in a group of 24. We all got along well. We especially appreciated the extra early morning visit to Meteora for picture-taking when there were no crowds or other tour buses. A special thanks to Reid for sharing with us various local snacks. I purchased the sesame “candy” at Duty Free to bring back to the U.S.

I would describe this tour as good, not great. That is mainly because I've traveled to many other countries and have seen a lot that looks like Greece elsewhere. The tour guide at Olympus (Niki?) was fantastic and she made it so much more interesting than I expected. Conversely, the guide in Santorini was fake, forced and not interesting. Santorini was a disappointment - what's the point if you don't see the famed blue domes? It's just another touristy island. The wonderful guide in Athens (Fani?) was excellent and I wish we could have spent MUCH more time with her. The tours of the two museums (Acropolis and Archeological) were much, much too rushed. Those of us who enjoy museums wanted a lot more time there. If it can't be incorporated into the itinerary, we need advance warning that we should plan to spend a day or more before or after the tour to see what we want. If I had known the museums would be so abbreviated, I would have extended my time in Athens. The free day we had (vacation from our vacation) was not good because of the location. The hotel view was spectacular, no doubt, but there was nothing to do. Expecting us to walk up and down the incredibly steep steps (on the shortcut) to the town is not reasonable. Not having a golf cart or some kind of transportation to town is not reasonable. Travelers don't bring heavy books to read so there's nothing to read in English to kill the time. No spa, no massage, no local market, no nothing. At our age, sunbathing is not something we do, either. I don't travel to hike (can do that anywhere in the US). Pick a different town where there's something to do. So, for beginner travelers, I'd say that this tour would have been wonderful but for me as an experienced traveler, it didn't give me anything unique or especially noteworthy.
