About this trip

Join us for a hike in Mayrhofen in the Zillertal Alps, Austria

In 2022 we inaugurated our hiking trips to Austria in the Montafon region near the border of Switzerland. We hike here again in 2023. Now we are offering a new hiking trip in the Zillertal region of Austria, east of Innsbruck and near the Italian border.

Edwin de Bruijn will again be our leader for this trip, in another region of Austria that he knows well.

Each region of Austria is unique. The mountains and valleys are different, the architecture, the food, the German dialect. Hence we are pleased to open a second area of Austria to you.

You will be able to fly directly into Innsbruck to begin this hiking tour where you’ll board a train to take you to Mayrhofen in the Ziller valley. There we’ll all check into our hotel that will serve as our headquarters for the next eight nights.

Following breakfast each morning, we’ll have the choice of taking a cable car or a small bus upward to the start of our day’s hike. The difficulty of the hiking will be moderate. We will generally traverse the sides of mountains, rather then climb directly up or down. (We won’t do any technical rock climbing, nor cross any glaciers, both which would require specialized skills.)

When it is time to eat lunch we’ll picnic or eat at a mountain hut. After our hike, we’ll return to our hotel for a rest, or perhaps a sauna, before settling down to a gourmet dinner.

Take a day by bike: As an extra feature of this trip, you’ll have the option of taking a day on a bicycle for a different view of the Austrian alps.

About the Hiking

The Ziller Valley in Austria is a hiker’s paradise. It is also a major ski center in the winter, meaning there are major cable cars which we can use to climb out of the valley and quickly arrive above tree line. Once there, we’ll be walking through mountain pastures and over an occasional pass.  While we won’t be rock climbing or crossing any glaciers, the hiking will be of an intermediate nature. The trail surface can be rocky or muddy in sections, but generally, it won’t be overly challenging.

We ask that all hikers on this trip have good hiking equipment, be in moderate to good condition, and be ready to carry oneself on foot throughout the day. If you have any questions about whether this trip is appropriate for you, please contact us so we can talk it over together.

We will leave our bags at the hotel, so you’ll only need to carry a small pack while hiking with additional outerwear, water and a snack.

A Day on Bicycle

In the middle of the week, you’ll have the option to take a bike ride down the valley on a 25 km bike path to enjoy the beauty from two wheels. At the end of the bike path you’ll have the option of taking the train back to our hotel or return on your bicycle.

Traveling can be stressful, but we take the worry out of travel by handling all the hard bits for you. We do the planning, book the hotels, and reserve your restaurant. We know the villages to visit, the vineyards to tour, and the cooking classes to attend. We set all this up for you. Then we make your trip easy. First we pick you up at the airport in a small van and whisk you to your hotel. We travel with you from place to place, from activity to activity, and finally deliver you back to the airport for your flight home.

It was a great trip. We explored the out of the way places across Costa Rica. We certainly did not do the normal tourist thing: volcanos, experimental forest, eco lodge, children's forest, production of coffee, the making of chocolate, watching a sea turtle preparing to lay eggs, watching baby sea turtles making their way to the ocean, helping in the saving of sloth from highway death, vipers in the grass, birds of all kinds (potoo), flowers we have never seen before, sloths in trees, poison dart frogs, alligators, a night walk in the rain forest, experiencing the rain forest in a down pour and heavy rain one night for 20 minutes every dark hour, the beach, fine meals, and even a truck stop for lunch. I recommend this trip to others who are looking for something a little different, but with the comforts you are used too. Easy hikes for most of us (walking a few miles).

I loved this trip. The other participants were interesting and fun, and the sites we visited were interesting and somewhat off the beaten track. Our guide, Alberto, couldn't have been better. He was knowledgeable, and his ability to spot and show us tiny frogs and other things that I never would have seen on my own was fantastic. Our driver was competent and able to drive us safely and apparently fearlessly in challenging locatons. The lodgings were all excellent. I have traveled with Travel Fever before and have always been satisfied. I'm so glad I went! Kathy Greve

What a wonderful trip! It couldn't have been better. I enjoyed every aspect of it: the variety of activities, the beauty of the city and its people and plant-life, the local presenters and all the people leading and on the tour, as well as the comfort and quality of where we stayed and what we ate. I am definitely hoping to join another "travel fever tours" trip in the near future!

Great travel leaders (Bob and Cicely) who attended to every detail, from hotel to food and beyond. The hotel was a great choice, and both Bob and the hotel helped me out by agreeing to move me to a quieter room. Edwin was a fabulous person and Alpine guide. I would trust and follow him anywhere. Lots of flexibility was built in to accommodate the guests' needs and abilities during the walks. I would do this trip again as there was a lot left to see and do in the region.
