About this trip

Visit a mystical lake in the crater of a volcano which up to day is used by Mayan people to perform their sacred rituals. The majority of them are inhabitants on San Martín Sacatepéquez and belong to one of the 23 Mam groups in Guatemala. The Mam are modern Mayan people who live in southwestern Guatemala and parts of southern Mexico. At least 500 Mil live in Guatemala. For them, Laguna Chicabal is a sacred and miraculous place – the mystic perception becoming even more convincing because of its shape and the fog that shrouds the volcano. Maya priests perform traditional ceremonies on the shore using candles, flowers and holy crosses. The guide joining you at this unique tour will be a local from Quetzaltenango, or even a local guide from the Chicabal lagoon, and will explain all there is to know about Mayan religion, Mayan culture, and the local plants and animals.

Difficulty Level

  1. Distance and Duration:
    • The hike is approximately 3-4 kilometers (round trip), with the ascent taking about 1-1.5 hours and a shorter time to descend.
    • The trail involves a combination of dirt paths, some steep sections, and steps leading down to the crater lake.
    • If you do not want to hike ... there is also a " torito " , a 4x4 pick up truck who can bring you up to the volcano :-)
  2. Elevation:
    • Laguna Chicabal is at around 2,712 meters (8,900 feet) above sea level. The altitude might make the hike feel more strenuous for those unaccustomed to it.
  3. Trail Conditions:
    • Well-marked but can be muddy, especially during the rainy season (May to October).

Suitability for Kids

  • Age and Fitness:
    • Active kids aged 7+ generally find the hike enjoyable. Younger children may need help during steeper sections.
  • Pacing:
    • Allow for frequent breaks, especially for those not used to hiking or the altitude.
  • Engagement:
    • The lush cloud forest, scenic views, and the mystical atmosphere of the sacred lake make it an engaging experience for kids. Adults will also enjoy the peace and ... the birds , lots of birdlife in that area ..

Tips for a Smooth Experience

  1. Start Early:
    • Begin in the morning to avoid midday heat and crowds.  The hike starts at 6.00am
  2. Bring Snacks and Water:
    • Stay hydrated and carry light snacks to keep yourself energized.
  3. Dress Comfortably:
    • Wear sturdy shoes, bring layers for cooler temperatures, and pack rain gear if needed.
  4. Discuss Local Culture:
    • The lake is a sacred site for the Maya, and it's a great opportunity to teach yourself and your kids about local traditions. Remind them to be respectful, as ceremonies are often conducted at the lake.
