About this trip

The Kjalvegur road was essential for connecting the north and the south of Iceland and was used by Viking armies, traders, shepherds and explorers despite the harsh conditions of the central highlands.

In the old days, the highlands were inhabited by trolls, outlaws, thieves, ghosts and other magical creatures that scared travelers and locals alike, and the road was lost and forgotten for generations until it was rediscovered at the end of the 19th century.

During the journey you will witness incredible contrasts of vegetation and barren wastelands.

You will see mountains displaying vivid colors of red, green, blue, and yellow that contrast with the black lava and the white snow.

Glaciers, rivers and waterfalls carve through the landscape and you might even run into some friendly sheep wandering freely, grazing the hills.

No heavy packs will be carried and all our luggage will be transported between destinations.

Our guide will be a local Icelander who will provide delicious local meals each day.

This is a supported trip, meaning we will have an experienced highland driver in a 4x4 mountain truck to bring our luggage from hut-to-hut. Each guest has one item of luggage. Sleeping bags can be separate from the luggage bag. Both the truck and the highland buses go through rivers. The luggage can get wet. We highly recommend a strong waterproof duffel bag. Each person is responsible to carry their luggage to and from the mountain truck each day.

Hiking the Laugavegur trail was an adventure! A challenging adventure for a group of slightly older than the average on the trail. We hiked, stayed in huts, were fed filling and lovely meals, lots of snacks and the odd box of beer and wine to celebrate those long days on your feet. So so worth it. Magnus and his trusty dog Fenris were master guides and I felt safe at all times particularly when the weather turned on us with Magnus helping anyone that needed it up some steep ascents and descents. It was 55km of long days, up and down hills, fun nights and good humour. Magnus is your guide. Just do it! Thank you Trekking with Purpose. Amazing.
