Borana is located at the heart of Borana Conservancy. Steeped in history and style, the lodge is set against a beautiful hillside with unobstructed views of the conservancy. By staying at Borana Lodge, our guests are making a direct contribution to the sustainable conservation of land, wildlife and building local livelihoods. Perfect for families, honeymoons and special occasions, Borana Lodge offers some of the most authentic and exciting ways to encounter Kenya’s wildlife and immersive wilderness.

Borana Lodge has a wide variety of activities on offer, no two days will be the same. From riding horses with wildebeest, tracking rhino on foot at first light to whizzing through herds of zebra on e-Bikes, we are sure to keep our guests busy. For those who like to take life at a slower pace, we can offer bush walks, river picnics and in-room massages by our masseuse.

We pride ourselves on encouraging guests to go beyond the game drive, and spend time with our rangers, nurses or the teachers who form important parts of the Borana Conservancy story. We give each guest the opportunity to experience an authentic look into how a successful wildlife conservation area is run.

Itineraries and Experiences

Each and every stay at Borana is unique and personalized, tailor-made to suit your needs. Ride as much or as little as you like and choose from a variety of additional activities.

Activities Available Include:

  • Horse riding
  • Mountain Biking and e-Biking
  • Rhino tracking
  • 4x4 and walking game drives
  • Fishing
  • Cultural tours
  • Farm visits

Horses

Borana keeps a stable of over thirty horses suitable for all riders, including have patient, easy horses, who have been trained to be careful with children and novice riders. From the stables, guests can ride through the plains among giraffe, zebra, eland and impala and experience wildlife at close quarters.

For the more experienced rider, there are thoroughbred horses and thoroughbred-crosses. All the horses are well-schooled and ridden in snaffle bridles. Guests can explore Borana and beyond, meandering across this beautiful landscape and riding among a variety of wildlife species which populate the conservancy.

Riding Level

All Levels Welcome

For beginners and non-riders, there are activities available onsite which cater to all levels.

Tack and Terrain

English-style Wintec saddles and have a few Australian stock saddles. These are chosen specifically to ensure the comfort of both the horse and rider.

Accommodation

The Lodge is designed around the main house which is where guests and guides gather for drinks and dinner in the evenings. Created out of locally sourced materials, the main house has a vaulted thatched roof and a large rose-wood bar. With two large fireplaces, the bar is the perfect place to enjoy one of our signature cocktails and reminisce on the day’s adventures.

The Borana Lodge pool is found nestled into our indigenous gardens, next to the lunch pavilion. With a pool bar and exotic bird life, it is perfect for lounging away in the heat of the day, keeping an eye on the hillside for wildlife traversing the valley below.

At the bottom of the hill, within the Lodge grounds, you will find a secluded hide overlooking a bustling water trough with a salt lick and the Hyena Valley Dam. Here guests can spy on wildlife at ankle level, up close and undisturbed, complete with a picnic hamper of snacks and refreshing drinks.

Dining

The Borana Lodge menus have been carefully designed to source all produce locally, with the majority coming from Waitbit Farm. This is an organic permaculture project found between Lewa and Borana Conservancies on the banks of the Ngare Ndare River.

Waitabit Farm tours are a wonderful activity for guests of all ages, giving an insight into the trials and tribulations of running an organic farm in between two successful wildlife conservation areas.

The Hide is also where we set up our infamous bush dinners. With a live cooking experience designed around a Swahili menu, dinner at the hide is a memorable experience under a blanket of stars.

I had a wonderful time. Our driver and guide were very knowledgeable and took their time explaining the sites we visited and saw along the way. There was so much packed into one day I think I would have skipped Seal Island and spent a bit longer at some of the other sites.
By Nancy E for South Africa - MORIN on Mar 15, 2025
Thank you Nancy! There are truly so many amazing things to do in Cape Town, it's hard to fit it into one day! I'm glad you had a wonderful time, and hope you travel again with us next time!

**** Awesome Adventure. Oliver of Flower Hill Equestrian Center was the perfect host, manager, and trainer for us to get up to speed! His horses were not only beautiful but world class jumpers and brave! I can not say enough about his operation and him as a person. He made it fun! Alicia Bertone
