Our daily routine typically begins with an early morning wake-up Pilates stretch, followed by breakfast on the boat. We’ll spend the mornings, usually until about 12-2pm, either searching for or swimming with the whale sharks. During this time, snacks and water will be available on the boat. 

After returning to our hotel for lunch, the afternoons are yours to enjoy the island’s tranquillity. On some days, there will be optional beach clean-up activities or personal development sessions organised. 

The time before dinner is perfect for a beach stroll to watch the sunset or participate in a beach clean. Our evenings will consist of a group dinner, followed by either a workshop or a conservation talk. 

This expedition is a fully immersive, conservation experience. Not only will you contribute to vital research, but we also aim to inspire a deep-seated passion for ocean protection, fuelled by your personal encounters with a variety of marine life and informative lectures on ocean conservation. 

Whale sharks are the largest fish on earth and remain largely enigmatic, spending most of their time in deep waters. They are believed to live up to 100 years, but their numbers are in decline due to threats like fishing and pollution. Our goal is to gather data on these sharks to better understand their behaviours and habits. 

Almost every day, we’ll venture out on a traditional dhow boat in search of whale sharks. Upon sighting, you’ll join the team to swim and collect data alongside them, including photographing their unique spot patterns, akin to human fingerprints, for individual identification. After data collection, you’re free to swim with them as much as you like – usually we tire out before they do! 

Snorkelling is the method we use to swim with the whale sharks, so no diving experience is required However, as these are wild animals, sightings can never be guaranteed. We schedule the expedition during peak migration season and our extended stay increases the likelihood of encounters, but it’s important to manage expectations as sightings are not assured. 

In addition to whale shark research, the program includes lectures and workshops on whale sharks, coral, and broader marine conservation issues. We will also conduct beach clean-ups and learn to monitor and gather data on corals. 

AN IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to significant overfishing issues on the island, we serve only vegetarian meals during the trip. We expect participants to support and adhere to this practice. 

Our days begin early on the boats, as this is when the sharks are most active. This means the afternoons afford ample time for relaxing by the pool! 

For those who prefer to stay active, there’s a variety of activities to engage in beyond our conservation efforts. Gentle Pilates sessions, workshops on personal goal setting and other group activities will offer plenty of options for any free time. 

Midway through the trip, we’ll take a day to explore the other side of the island and visit the marine park for more snorkelling and a trip to a lagoon. Another highlight is our visit to Chole Island, a hidden gem that sees only approximately 200 visitors a year. With no cars on the island, we’ll explore ancient ruin and witness the world’s largest bats, the Flying Foxes. 

To cap off this unforgettable experience, our last night will include a sunset cruise and a beach BBQ. After this, our local boat crew will most likely try and persuade you to dance the night away with them at the island’s local ‘club’!  

It is important to be aware that Mafia Island is a place of poverty and isolation. While we enjoy comfortable lodging, the reality of life on the islands can be starkly different. Malaria and other diseases are present, so consultation with your GO for preventative measures and necessary vaccinations is essential. 

Many island residents live in basic conditions, often in mud huts without running water or electricity. The local Tanzanians are known for their friendly yet reserved demeanour. Engaging with the locals and learning about their distinct lifestyle so different from our own is a valuable aspect of the Mafia experience. 

We are committed to ethical practices, ensuring that our local teams are paid fairly and above the average wage. Our presence on the island is designed to positively impact the local economy. If you wish to contribute further, you’re welcome to bring clothes, books, or toys for donation to nearby schools or nurseries. However, we advise against bringing plastic items, as the island already faces challenges with plastic pollution.
