About this trip

What if Retreat

A mixed media discovering your language though materials, process and observation.

This workshop is based on demonstrations of a variety of materials, prompts and exercises to get to the core of personal meaning. The focus is on exploration, intuition, and pushing out of your comfort zone. Directives include formal elements such as line, shape, space, color, and composition with fast-paced timing based on discovery rather than finished products. Techniques will focus on markmaking, layering, collaging, excavating, combining materials, and more. Some of the materials we will be using include: dirt, coffee, natural materials, inks, acrylic mediums and paint plus cold wax and R&F Pigment Sticks©

Participants will create many small works to let go of the "precious" mentality. Freedom of expression is emphasized!

Participants will not only develop their technical skills but also gain a deeper understanding of their artistic style and voice. By immersing themselves in the making process and consistently producing pieces, artists will have the opportunity to reflect on their work, identify patterns, and uncover recurring themes. This self-exploration and reflection are invaluable in helping artists to refine their artistic vision, and ultimately, find their unique visual language that sets them apart as creators.

Reviews

This was a wonderful workshop! Melinda is a fantastic artist and instructor who met each attendee where they were in their artistic journey. With a combination of visual examples, demos, exercises and time to paint, every artist came away with new insights and inspiration. I will definitely take another course with her! The Connecticut River Inn was a wonderful venue -- from the rooms to the meals, beautiful grounds, location and studio space. Pat is a very creative and generous innkeeper. I would highly recommend this venue and especially Melinda's instruction!

The Melinda Cootsona workshop and retreat was absolutely wonderful. I loved the teaching and small sized group. Everything about the Inn was excellent, clean and well maintained. The food was really delicious. Truly a remarkable experience in every way.

Cannot say enough about how wonderful this retreat was. The surroundings, the inn itself, Pat and her staff, the food and our instructor Alain Picard. The atmosphere was very homey but there were three sit down meals each day. The decor of the inn again was homey yet the artistic touches were unique and in some cases-the showers- breathtaking . It all enabled me to learn and work on my art with a clear mind untroubled by any daily needs. I am planning to return for another retreat and am looking forward to another great experience.
