The 1 day Mafia Whale Shark adventure is for the daring travellers who wish to experience what it feels to swim with the gentle Whale sharks in their natural habitat – Mafia Island on the East African Coast (South of Dar es Salaam). These creatures live in the Mafia waters throughout the year although with favorable conditions move on the surface of shallow waters near Kilindoni hence making it a perfect place to see them. For travellers who wish to swim with them, the best months of October, November, December, January, February and March.
When you hear “Whale sharks”, you imagine a ferocious creature but surprisingly, they are naturally shy, gentle, peaceful and harmless sea creatures that feed on large quantities of plankton that they always hand up while swimming.

Your Mafia Whale shark adventure begins in the morning with a 45 to 60 minutes flight chartered directly to Mafia Island. This is the best flight of your East African safari with stunning views over the Ocean, vegetation and other beautiful attractions and on getting to the Island, you will be welcomed and greeted by experienced guide who will lead you to the starting point of the boat excursion.
First, be briefed on this adventurous experience before embarking on the traditional boat in the company of your guide to find the gentle whale sharks. You can swim with the stunning sea creatures then head back to the starting point (Whale Shark base) for the nicely prepared and served local Lunch. Enjoy your meal while interacting with other adventure seekers and afterwards undertake a short tour of Kilindoni City/Town or visit the nearest place to watch flying foxes and take some photos.
The relaxing City tour marks the end of your Mafia Island Adventure, then prepare for transfer to Mafia Airport for the chartered flight back to Zanzibar. Spend overnight at the Hotel in Zanzibar or get ready for the International flight (if it is scheduled for this day).
