Discover the culture of the Chagga tribe in Materuni Village, a short trip from Moshi Town. Hike to spectacular 80-meter (262-feet) waterfalls, savor a traditional lunch with a local banana beer, and learn about and make coffee at a coffee plantation.
After pickup in Moshi Town or Arusha, drive to Materuni Village with your English-speaking guide. Located just 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) from Moshi Town, Materuni is still an authentic tribal village home to the Chagga tribe and the last village before the Kilimanjaro National Park. Upon arrival, register at the village office then begin your trip. First, visit the waterfalls, which are around a 40-minute walk away. On the way, learn about the culture of the Chagga, village life, and the surrounding fauna and flora with your guide. Admire the breathtaking views and, with luck, catch sight of the summit of Kilimanjaro. When you reach the waterfalls, marvel at cascades that are more than 80-meters (262-feet) high. Take advantage of the inviting pool at the bottom of the waterfall and take a refreshing dip. Don't forget your swimwear! After enjoying the scenery, slowly return to Materuni Village with your guide. Once there, experience a traditional Chagga lunch and have the opportunity to taste the local banana beer. Next, the coffee experience awaits you. Learn how coffee is cultivated, dried, roasted and further processed. Receive an invitation to help with the grinding of the coffee, which is traditionally accompanied by Chagga songs and dances — a fun way to immerse yourself in the local culture. Before you say goodbye and return in the afternoon to Moshi or Arusha, savor the coffee you made and appreciate the views of the surrounding rainforest.
