About this trip

Come and experience the most EPIC TRAVEL ADVENTURE on the planet, hitching a ride on the Iron Ore train through the Sahara. In one of the world's least visited countries, Mauritania.*

Mauritania, in West Africa, is what real travel is about. Feel the culture of the nomadic tribes, road trip deep into the desert, camping under the stars, but remember to watch out for wild camels as you cross the road though.

Starting in Nouakchott, we'll get to know our new group before we venture into the desert. Here we'll visit one of the ancient cities of Islam, Chinguetti. We'll also be off-roading through the sand dunes and staying in local villages. It doesn't get more real than this.

And then of course, there's the iron ore train. No tickets, no timetable, no seats. We'll hop on the back of the iron ore, and ride it through the night to the Atlantic coast. See you there!

NOTE:

I'm also organising a 160km ULTRA MARATHON in Mauritania at the same time as this tour (both trips run concurrently). You'll have a western guide and a local guide for the first few days of this trip, then on Day 4 - Dec 9th - you'll arrive in Chinguetti and watch us finish the ultra marathon, and then both trips will be on the same schedule for riding the iron ore train together!).

*Please also note that the Iron Ore train is NEVER GUARANTEED. There are no tickets, no schedule, and the authorities can ban us at any time! I, fortunately, have a 100% success rate bringing over 200 people on the train across 10+ trips, but still it isn't ever certain. Mauritania is of course worth it regardless of the train! No refunds are possible should we get kicked off the train on the last day.

The Iron Ore Train

The iron ore train has now been deemed illegal by the company. But don't worry, we'll try our best to get on it anyway, as usual. (We have a 100% success rate, but nothing is ever guaranteed!)

Such a blast! Johnny’s trips never disappoint! Loved the overnight camping on a gorgeous island in the Red Sea! Asmara and Massawa were also incredible. Missing those views already. As always, the memories and friendships made during trip will last a lifetime.

This was an incredible trip from start to finish! Excellent food, awesome accommodations, and the most kind and welcoming people I’ve ever encountered. Seeing their happiness at having tourists again after so much turmoil at home was something truly special. Witnessing war torn towns and cities and then the beauty of Old Damascus has left me without words.

The itenary was great, even without Keren. Actually might have been that having Keren in it would have left too little time to Asmara and Massawa. Lunches on the road could maybe have been included as paying for them as such a mess most of the time. The bus was a bit small, but the group consisted of so nice people that I got more space for my legs when I needed it. For a first-timer the communication in the WhatsApp group especially before trip was a bit overwhelming and contained both important things and people just saying hi to each other. Most important things came however also as emails, appreciated. Would participate again to another trip if the destination would be one I'd wish to do.

Thank you for another fantastic experience Johnny. Eritrea was on the list for a while and we got to see it like few other do. The warmth of every Eritrean we met, the incredible Art Deco architecture and the general safety of the country made this one for the books. Onto the next one!

Third trip with Johnny, won’t be the last. The group culture he creates is really uniquely special in addition to the fun and adrenaline on the itinerary.
