About this trip

Embracing Chaos - Techniques in Abstraction and Figurative Work

Do you have moments of complete frustration with your work? We all do. In this course Melinda will help you to embrace those moments and learn to work with the idea of Chaos and ‘The Uglies’ in your paintings for as long as possible in order to achieve rich work with history and lasting interest. Are you looking for more personal expression? Additionally, we will look at setting Creative and Conceptual Intentions in order to create meaningful, individual work.

We will focus on the importance of contrast in our work by looking at the Elements of Design which will give you concrete ideas in abstraction that will help with your decision making when creating abstract work. These Elements, mixed with several Approaches to Figurative Abstraction will spark your creativity and give you lots to work on going forward. Join Melinda Cootsona in this fast-paced workshop as we embrace chaos and make history together!

This workshop is for intermediate to advanced level students. Oil paint or Acrylic paint is acceptable. Oil painters may use cold wax medium and some cold wax techniques may be demonstrated, but this is not a cold wax specific course.

About Melinda Cootsona

I love to paint and to inspire others to create.

I am an artist now living in the beautiful Coachella Valley of Southern California. I was born and raised in Silicon Valley and am a California girl through and through. Inspired by the California landscape, colors, and light, I look to capture it’s essence in much of my work.

Thick, gooey oil paint is my medium, and my work is created by applying layers of shapes, colors, and textures of paint to the canvas over a period of days and weeks.  I also now incorporate cold wax medium into much of my work to create rich history, texture and transparency.

I have been teaching painting to students of all levels for over 20 years. My goal is always to inspire students to find their own voice in their work, and to build  confidence in their creative process. This world needs more creative people and my goal is to help you find your creative potential whether you are a beginning, “returning,” or experienced artist.

Cannot say enough about how wonderful this retreat was. The surroundings, the inn itself, Pat and her staff, the food and our instructor Alain Picard. The atmosphere was very homey but there were three sit down meals each day. The decor of the inn again was homey yet the artistic touches were unique and in some cases-the showers- breathtaking . It all enabled me to learn and work on my art with a clear mind untroubled by any daily needs. I am planning to return for another retreat and am looking forward to another great experience.

If you've ever wanted the opportunity to do nothing but quilt while lovely people attend to your every need and prepare wonderful meals and snacks for you, Pat's Artists Rising Retreats are for you. Pat's historic Connecticut River Valley Inn has been lovingly restored and updated. The accommodations are splendid, spacious, and quiet. The gardens are amazing and the workshop space looks out over the grounds. The food is delicious. Pat and Teri are charming and accommodating. Every single thing is perfect. Pat and her staff prepare three meals a day for attendees and the food was consistently wonderful. At my retreat, there was one vegetarian, one person gluten-free, one person dairy-free and one person who doesn't eat onions. Pat fed us all, kept it straight, and was good-natured about our group of fussy eaters. It was remarkable. Sue Benner is one of the most admired, respected, and collected textile artists in the world. It turns out that she is also a smart, supportive, creative, adaptable, hard-working, generous, and level-headed teacher. Sue shared her techniques, creative processes, ideas, hacks, wisdom and humor for five days. we learned from watching her work as well as from her prepared materials and daily slide shows. I feel lucky for the opportunity to study with her. The Sue Benner workshop at Pat's Artists Rising retreats in Connecticut is a five-star event. I would go back in a heartbeat.

I can’t say enough good things about the experience I had at the David R. Daniels retreat through Artist Rising. The grounds and studio were beautiful, a real inspiration for creativity. Our hosts did everything to make us comfortable from delicious food to enjoyable conversation. Every detail was thoughtfully considered. Thank you so much for a wonderful week!

The artist retreat at Connecticut River Valley Inn was fabulous from beginning to end! It was in a beautiful setting filled with gorgeous landscaping everywhere you looked. The owner, Pat Brubaker, is an artist and that was evident from her attention to detail from the accommodations, table settings, fresh homemade meals, and the actual art studio. All of this was beyond my expectations, even though the website is very accurate! Our instructor, David Daniels, is a master teacher and extraordinary artist with decades of experience painting and teaching. I highly recommend taking a class with him. His style is casual, hands-on, and filled with ideas that you can put to use regardless of your level of experience. This artist retreat had a very positive impact on me personally and as an artist, so I'm very grateful for this wonderful experience!
