About this trip

Join us to explore Tanzania, a region steeped in history, diversity and local traditions.  This is unique itinerary that combines professional engagement with cultural immersion.  Learn about mental health and integrated healthcare programs across the region while spending time with faculty and staff at various associations, clinics and hospitals.

Tanzania is rich in cultural diversity, with over 120 ethnic groups, each contributing unique traditions, art, and cuisine to the tapestry of the country. You'll have an opportunity to experience the warm hospitality of the local people and learn about their deep-rooted cultural heritage, much of which continues in tribal life today.

Explore Arusha National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park where you can witness diverse wildlife including the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros) in their natural habitats.

Professional Interaction

- Meet with mental health practitioners from a variety of settings in Tanzania including a local hospital like Mt. Meru Regional Referral Hospital. You will learn about their mental health systems through interactions and group discussions.

- Learn about access to care challenges in Tanzania through interactions with psychologists and allied healthcare professionals involved in the local mental health programs.

- We will request 7.0 CE through the University of Denver Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP) for approval by the American Psychological Association who sponsor continuing education for psychologists. GSPP maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Focus on the Community & Culture

- Visit Monduli Juu Village for a Maasai Tribe cultural experience.

- Visit the Albino Center whose team is putting in the work to fight the stigma and discrimination this community face in Tanzania.

- Visit the Ngorongoro Crater for a safari experience. Take a walking tour of Arusha National Park to take in the many scents and sounds of the African bush. Enjoy time with a ranger to see the animals that freely roam the park.

- Explore the bustling agricultural town of Arusha, stroll around the Maasai market, another local market, and visit the Natural History Museum inside the old German boma.

Guests are welcome and will participate in cultural activities while professional members attend meetings. See daily itinerary for guest program details.

An optional 3-night Serengeti extension will be available to extend your time to see the wildebeest during calving season. This includes a stop at the Olduvai Gorge Museum

The tour was fantastic, providing a good mix of professional and touristy elements. I liked how we had an opportunity to engage with library staff from each of the libraries. The size was perfect, allowing for a more personalized experience for everyone. The guide, Des O'Brien, was very knowledgeable and caring. Dr. Alire was warm and delightful. I found the support by the Nanda team to be outstanding - both Nicola Balmain and Debra Arthur - they provided timely information and support and developed a wonderful tour!
