About this trip

The Short Inca Trail is a great way to hike to Machu Picchu in a short amount of time. It is essentially a one day Inca Trail hike followed by a Machu Picchu tour the next day, after spending a night in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes.

On this 2 day Inca Trail adventure, you’ll get a taste of the “classic” Inca Trail hike, visit Wiñay Wayna and walk through Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, into Machu Picchu. Day 2 of this itinerary gives you a chance to fully explore the impressive Machu Picchu citadel with an experienced guide.

Itinerary

DAY 1 - 3 Aug
SHORT INCA TRAIL HIKE TO MACHU PICCHU

· Total Walking Distance: 13 km (8 mi)

· Total Walking Time: 7 hours

· Minimum Altitude: 2050m (6725 ft) / Maximum Altitude: 2700m (8858 ft)

Train to Km104, the start of the One Day Inca Trail Hike

We will travel by car from your hotel to the Ollantaytambo train station. You should ask your hotel in advance about preparing a box breakfast to take with you on the journey.

From Ollantaytambo, we travel by train on a very picturesque route for 1.5h until we reach kilometer 104, the start of the Short Inca Trail for us. Shortly after crossing the bridge over the Vilcanota River we visit the site of Chachabamba (2050m / 6725 ft), a lovely archaeological site with water channels and fountains.

From here, we will hike upwards for about 5km (3 mi), approximately 3.5 hours. This part of the Inca Trail is well established, but there are many stairs and the hike is mostly upwards! There are also some sharp drops down towards the river which can be challenging for those who don’t like heights. While this is one of the shortest treks around the Cusco region, it is definitely not the easiest, especially in the hot sun. You still need to have a reasonable level of fitness to complete it.

A steep climb to Wiñay Wayna, then Inti Punku to Machu Picchu

Following our upwards climb, we arrive at the Inca site Wiñay Wayna (“forever young”) (2700m / 8858 ft). This is an impressive complex made up of an agricultural center with numerous terraces, a religious sector, and an urban sector. Many consider this the most impressive site on the whole Inca Trail!

After lunch, we continue for about another hour and a half across undulating terrain until we arrive at Inti Punku, the Sun Gate (2730m / 8,956 ft). There is a final, steep climb up stone steps until we reach this point, where you will have your first dramatic view of Machu Picchu (2400m / 7,874 ft).

We’ll have a moment to capture those classic photos, then we will walk down the last part of the trail towards the ancient city itself. After taking in the views at the Guardian’s Hut, we will exit the ruins in order to catch the bus down to Aguas Calientes, as we will visit Machu Picchu on Day 2.

After checking into our Aguas Calientes hotel for the night, we’ll enjoy a celebratory dinner and then it’s off to bed, in preparation for the next day’s early start.

Included:

Meals: L, D

Inclusions: Private transport; Expedition train to Km104; private English-speaking guide; Inca Trail permit and other entry fees; bus down to Aguas Calientes

Overnight: Standard hotel in Aguas Calientes included

Reviews

If you are seeking a truly exceptional journey through Peru, one that bypasses the crowds and unveils hidden gems off the beaten path, then Apus Peru is your perfect match. Apus and their entire team orchestrated an extraordinary experience that made our first visit to Peru unforgettable. We were especially delighted by our outstanding guide, Arturo. His depth of knowledge, meticulous attention to the itinerary, and vibrant personality made each day an absolute pleasure. Our driver was equally delightful—punctual, charming, and always ready for us with a warm smile. While some of the trekking equipment showed signs of wear and could benefit from an update, this minor issue did not detract from our overall experience. In fact, it is easily remedied and hardly a blemish on what was otherwise a flawless adventure. All in all, our time with Apus was superb, and I would not hesitate to use their services again or to recommend them to anyone seeking a unique and memorable Peruvian adventure. Serena M.

We just came back from a 7-day Choquequirao Trek ending at Machu Picchu (https://www.apus-peru.com/tour/choquequirao-trek-to-machu-picchu-7d). What an amazing experience it was! Peru is such a great country with welcoming people, mouthwatering food and ancient culture. Apus Peru made sure we had the best experience possible exploring it all! Starting with "getting to know us calls" prior to the trip and in person meeting as we were acclimating in Cusco, Apus team made sure we knew what we were getting into - one of the most challenging of their treks. They didn’t sugar coat anything and as such our group of 7 ranging in age from 11 to 62 was well prepared (an extra emergency horse helped provide peace of mind). The Choquequirao trek is magnificent. It takes your breath away - figuratively and literally - as it is one of the most challenging routes in the area. However, our guide, cooks and horsemen made sure we were well taken care of. Let’s start with horsemen - super humans always in a great mood, helping us start the days with coca tea, leading the horses and packing and unpacking the camps as we make our way. The cooks - Lenardo and his assistant - are super humans in their own way. They served us three meals and snacks and pre dinner tea with snacks daily. The menu was local and totally amazing and the presentation … well 5-star restaurant doesn’t describe it. Drinks, soups, main dishes we never heard of - my kids who are not fans of veggies and soups normally would gobble them up in no time. And finally our guide - Arturo! He was a gem! His knowledge of local customs and cultures, sites that we visited and families on whose land we stayed ensured that we had the best experience possible. He got to know the strengths and weaknesses of all 7 of us pretty quickly and would adapt the trekking time and speed to our abilities…. Or he made sure that we would never trek at the height of the heat unless it were necessary - which we greatly appreciated. He was very patient as some of us found our stride while the teenager kept up with the horsemen. I think he also might have his way with the condors as when we were ready to leave the valley - we saw one :). When you reserve a tour with Apus, you pick a certain category of hostel and hotel for the last two nights. Apus team made sure to pick good quality locations within that price range. What’s more, at the end of the trip when the cooks left, Apus picked amazing restaurants for our celebratory dinner and lunch at Machu Picchu. They treat you as a guest in their country and not just as a paying unit… Overall undoubtedly a 5-star rating to Apus for making sure our trip was such a success!

Incredibly well-thought-out itinerary that had us in unsuspecting places. Our small city tour was a great way to be introduced to Cusco. The Virgen del Carmen fiesta in Paucartambo was a fun experience (although with insight, we are better prepared for the next visit!). The visit to Casa Mantay was meaningful and it's an honor to be able to learn and help the community in our small way during our visit. The evening cooking class with the Choco Museo where we first went into market was a fun experience as well! Overall grateful for the ease of planning and felt very informed of schedules, expectations, logistics, payment, etc.

This was a very rewarding trip. The staff and guides from Apus Peru were outstanding in every respect, from communication before the trek to guidance and assistance on the trek itself. They were patient, professional, comprehensive, and prompt in answering all my questions. My guide, Marco, as well as the cook, horsemen, and driver, were all excellent. They were attentive throughout and made it a priority for me to enjoy the trek at my own pace and in a manner with which I was comfortable. The views on this trek were simply amazing. Due to flight delays I did not have as much time to acclimate to the altitude as I would have liked, but my guide took that into account and made sure I did not get over-fatigued or experience too much discomfort. I highly recommend Apus Peru for any trekking adventure.

The Ausangate trekking with Apus Peru The Ausangate trekking was breathtaking in every way! To hike at an altitude of around 5000m and camp in frigid temperature is not an easy feat but it was worth it. The majesty of the glacier was simply amazing. Also, I have never dreamed of seeing the Milky Way so clearly. Our group of four was assisted by Aggripino, Miguel and Juan, three hard working muleteers. Leandro, our cook, fed us great food fit for the trekking. Finally, our awesome guide Arturo was very attentive and knowledgeable. A unique experience.
