About this trip

OTAVALO CULTURAL SHOPPING (Tuesday and Saturday)

From Quito to Otavalo there is a 2 hour bus ride, but in our tour we visit 6 different attractions between Quito and Otavalo in one day. Our trip is by the Panamericana Norte to get to the Quitsato Sundial, located in the Cayambe canton, named after the snow-capped mountain present in the place. This cultural site built to measure the solstices and equinoxes, in pre-Hispanic times, also considered the "other half of the world", since the equator or equinoctial line crosses this place and half of the top of the snowy Cayambe. Its people live from livestock, agriculture, a sector dedicated to harvesting roses for export. To know its gastronomy we have a stop to have a cup of Ecuadorian coffee or chocolate with bizcochos; which are like a type of small breads made in oven with an incomparable flavor and the best of all that we will enter to see its elaboration process. Our next place to visit is Otavalo. It is located in the province of Imbabura known as the Province of the Lakes, a few minutes to reach our main destination, we have a viewpoint towards the lagoon of San Pablo and in the background the Imbabura hill, to decorate the landscape. Then we arrive at the largest and most important indigenous handicraft market in South America, it is possible to visit this market every day of the week. But in our 1 day tour we coincide the days of the biggest fair where all the artisans gather in the Plaza de los Ponchos, here we have 2 hours to make purchases and later head to Cotacachi. Here we will find another handicraft market specializing in leather products, being a small place we have 45 minutes. Our last place is the Cuicocha Lagoon located at 3068m (10065.62 feet) in an active volcanic crater with islets or domes and plant observation.

My experience at Dolphin Lodge was incredible. The schedule was packed with lots of great activities. All food was included, even breakfast on the first day and lunch on the last day. We were lucky enough to get Jorge as our guide, if you can be in his group - DO IT! He was extremely knowledgeable about the animals, despite us being told that he was a newer guide and didn’t speak english. He spoke incredible english that was very easy to understand. He has great eyes for spotting animals on the boat and was so considerate to ensure that each person could see it before he moved on. He also offered to take pictures for people. On top of that, he was very funny!! My group loved him and he made our trip 💝 10/10 Jorge

These multi tours really enhanced my Ecuador experience. Such beautiful and diverse country, with interesting stops besides the main focus, and really great restaurants for lunch. The guides were cheerful and knowledgeable. I'd highly recommend these tours!

The tour to Cotopaxi had its highlights and downsides. On the positive side, the guides and driver were very friendly and attentive, and the place itself is absolutely stunning. However, it’s important to note that the views depend heavily on the weather, so you might not get the full experience if the skies aren’t clear. Unfortunately, a major downside was the condition of the bikes provided for the downhill ride. The bikes were in terrible shape, with loose parts, bad brakes, and overall poor maintenance. It felt unsafe to use them, and it’s concerning that the company allows people to ride downhill with such equipment. This really put a damper on the experience, as safety should always be a top priority. If you’re considering this tour, I’d recommend confirming the bike conditions beforehand or skipping the biking portion altogether if they haven’t improved. The visit to Cotopaxi itself is worth it, but the biking experience needs serious attention.
