This morning, we’ll enjoy a truly special introduction to Mongolia by attending the opening ceremony of the Naadam Festival. Starting at Sukhbaatar Square, we’ll witness the transferring ceremony of the State White Nine Banners, highlighted by an impressive horse march. From there, we’ll proceed to the main festival grounds to experience the vibrant and colourful festivities that mark the start of this iconic celebration 

After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, we'll conclude our tour with a visit to the Gobi Cashmere store, the largest cashmere shop in Asia, where you'll have the opportunity to explore a wide selection of high-quality cashmere products.

Tonight, we’ll enjoy a traditional Mongolian music and dance performance before dinner, providing a culturally rich and memorable start to our journey through Mongolia.

We'll continue our journey by driving to Gorkhi Terelj National Park, one of Mongolia's most visited national parks, renowned for its stunning landscapes and outdoor activities.

En route, we'll stop at Tsonjin Boldog, a site steeped in the legacy of the great Chinggis Khan. Here, you'll have the chance to see the impressive giant horseback statue of Chinggis Khan, a monumental tribute to Mongolia's legendary founder and ruler.

Passing through the Nalaikh district, we’ll spend some time at a mosque there before entering the National Park. On arrival, we’ll enjoy a hike to visit the Aryapapa Meditation Temple, offering a peaceful retreat and stunning views of the surrounding natural landscapes.

Today we will be travelling to Hustai National Park, renowned for its population of Takhi, the famous Mongolian wild horses reintroduced to Mongolia from zoos around the world since 1992.

During the journey, we’ll detour to take a short hike to the ruins of Manzushir Monastery. Tragically destroyed during the communist purges of 1937, its remains still offer a glimpse into Mongolia’s rich spiritual history.

Upon arrival in the National Park, you'll receive a brief introduction about the Takhi horse and the diverse ecosystems within the park.

After the overview, continue exploring the area, where you may have the opportunity to observe these magnificent horses in their natural habitat, along with other wildlife and the stunning landscapes of Hustai National Park.

Our journey continues as we head to Khugnu Tarna Nature Reserve, where you can immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of the Gobi Desert. 

Here we’ll find the remarkable Elsen Tasarkhai, an 80-kilometer stretch of sand dunes. Here we’ll visit the Uvgun Monastery and hike the Khogno Khan mountain for views over the landscape’s stunning blend of desert, mountains, rivers and grasslands.

On arrival at our accommodation, we’ll also have the opportunity to experience a traditional Mongolian two-humped camel ride, exploring the desert landscape in a truly authentic way. This experience not only offers a close-up view of the desert's beauty but also a chance to engage with Mongolian culture and the traditional way of life.

Drive to Tsenkher Hot Springs, known for being the second hottest spring in Mongolia. 

The sulfur springs emerge from underground at a scorching 86 degrees Celsius and are situated at an altitude of 1860 meters above sea level. Bathing in these healing waters, especially in an outdoor pool under a starry sky, provides a sublime experience. 

As you relax in the warm, mineral-rich waters, enjoy the breathtaking view of the Milky Way, making for a memorable and soothing escape in the heart of Mongolia.

Today's drive leads us into the picturesque Orkhon Valley National Park, renowned for its scenic landscapes that include lush green meadows, dense pine forests, meandering streams, and stunning waterfalls.

This area, rich in both natural beauty and historical significance, offers a perfect opportunity to explore and enjoy the tranquil yet breathtaking environment of one of Mongolia's most cherished natural reserves.

Upon our arrival, we’ll hike to Orkhon Waterfall, a stunning natural feature formed by ancient volcanic lava flows.

The Orkhon Valley is the perfect place for horseriding and we’ll start the day with a horseback ride (or trek for those who do not wish to ride) along the Orkhon River, taking in the beautiful surrounding views.

After, a unique opportunity awaits us as we journey to visit a local yak-herding nomad family. 

Here we’ll spend time with the locals, learning how to cook traditional Mongolian dishes and, in the evening, try our hand at milking the yaks.

This morning, we journey to Kharkhorin, the ancient capital of the Great Mongolian Empire and a premier tourist destination. Upon arrival, we'll explore the Erdene Zuu Monastery, the oldest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, built in 1586 with stones from the ruins of Kharakhorum by Abtai Sain Khan. 

This historic monastic complex, part of the Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004.

After our visit to the monastery, we’ll continue to the Kharkhorum Museum to view exhibits and artifacts that richly illustrate the area's history and significance. We’ll also visit the Khaadiin Khaad Monument, located near the Orkhon River, before proceeding to our accommodation. 

This day offers a deep dive into Mongolia’s rich historical tapestry, set against the backdrop of its enduring natural beauty.

Today we’ll set off on a journey to Ugii Lake, which is famous for its vibrant ecosystem and scenic beauty. 

Occupying an elevated position, it’s a vital habitat for hundreds of migratory birds as well as being a popular fishing destination. 

On arrival, we’ll get out on the water for some kayaking and to soak up the tranquil waters, surrounded by stunning landscapes.

In Ulaanbaatar, we’ll stay in a 4-star hotel, offering comfort before venturing into the countryside.

Beyond the city, we’ll experience traditional Mongolian hospitality by staying in gers (yurts), immersing ourselves in the nomadic way of life. These cozy felt-lined dwellings, set against vast open landscapes, provide warmth and comfort with wood-burning stoves. Staying in a family-run ger camp allows us to embrace local customs—waking to the sound of grazing horses, enjoying home-cooked meals, and perhaps trying airag (fermented mare’s milk). Whether riding horseback across the steppes or simply soaking in the solitude, this is a chance to connect deeply with Mongolia’s centuries-old traditions.

Facilities

Ger camps balance authenticity with basic comforts. Each yurt typically has three individual beds with mattresses, and shared restroom facilities that may include eco-toilets, solar-powered showers, and (usually!) hot running water.

The exception is our night in Khugnu Tarna Nature Reserve (Day 5 – Monday, 14th July), where we’ll stay in a fully nomadic-run ger camp. While beds with mattresses will be provided, there is no running water, meaning no showers for the night, and facilities will be limited to a long-drop toilet.
