About this trip

Learn the basics of Navajo rug weaving using traditional wool yarns and tools.  Students will  warp the Navajo loom and create a small piece (approximately 8" X 11") using various tapestry techniques. The project is small so special attention can be given to the unique way that Navajo rugs are finished.  This way of weaving invites us to slow down, and take our time.  One Navajo woman said, "We must spin our warp threads strong to hold our prayers."  While we will not be spinning our warp, as we weave, our stories and thoughts are woven into our rug.  It is a process of bringing balance and beauty into our lives.  No previous weaving experience is needed.  Betty will provide the looms and tools for use during the class and may be purchased from the instructor.

Betty Glynn Carlson

.Betty Glynn Carlson has woven since 1972, but when she discovered Navajo weaving she felt a special kinship with this simple, reflective way to weave. Her work has been exhibited at juried shows in the Midwest, and she has also taught Navajo weaving at the Weavers Guild of Minnesota and at Sievers School of Fiber Arts in Wisconsin.
