Isla Mujeres is a small island located only 8 miles off the eastern shore of Cancun. This picturesque Caribbean Island moves at an idyllic pace compared with Cancun, which you will feel crossing the bay. This makes the location ideal for inexpensive flights into Cancún International Airport and a short 20-minute ferry ride from Puerto Juarez.
With the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other, it's no wonder that Isla Mujeres is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. You'll think you've found paradise as you enjoy the balmy temperatures and relax on completely on the island's silky white sand next to the deep turquoise and blue waters.
At just over 4 miles long and only around 1/2 a mile wide, it’s a tiny Mexican outpost with a Caribbean flavor and a special place in Mayan history. Spanish for "Island of the Women", Isla Mujeres was so named because of the presence of female stone idols found in temples on the island when Conqueror Francisco Hernández de Cordoba arrived in 1517.
At the southern tip of the Island and the easternmost edge of Mexico lies Punta Sur, where the sun first greets the country each morning. These windswept cliffs are also the highest elevation on the Yucatán Peninsula. Here you will be surrounded by the remains of the ancient Mayan temple honoring Ixchel, the goddess of childbirth and medicine. Taking its cue from the temple, the Punta Sur Sculpture Garden was created in 2001, and artworks by both Mexican and international artists, created to reflect the great civilization of the past, are scattered across the bluff, making for majestic Insta-worthy views. On Tuesday we will venture here as a group for an awe-inspiring sunrise meditation.
Not far from the hotel, on the western coast of the island, you’ll find La Tortugranja, a turtle sanctuary that will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The eco-warriors at the sanctuary have been protecting these marvelous marine critters for the past 15 years. There are six different species of turtle that nest on the island, and to protect a population threatened by fishermen who found egg-laying mothers easy pray, they surround turtle nests with wire cages and use their conservation facility to rear and release thousands of hatchlings each year. You can take a one-hour guided tour of the facility to learn more about its work, and there’s a small aquarium on site too, with seahorses, lobsters, crabs and plenty of colorful tropical fish to gawp at. You will have access to golf carts and plenty of free time to adventure and explore the sanctuary, among other Isla Mujeres attractions.
On Monday, you will have an opportunity to jump right in with the local sea life, as well as a few less likely citizens of the deep, Isla Mujeres offers an experience that’s an inspired mingling of culture and nature. The Museo Subacuatico de Arte (MUSA) is one of the largest underwater art attractions in the world and a scuba/snorkel experience unlike any you’ve encountered before. MUSA was conceived and founded in 2009 and is today made up of over 500 permanent sculptures including people, cars and underwater angels, spread across more than 4,500 square feet of the seabed. Built to demonstrate the interaction between art and environmental science, these sculptures now form part of a complex reef structure for marine life to colonize and inhabit and are slowly being claimed by coral, seaweed, and fish. At 8-10 feet deep, this is a perfect dive for beginners, and within reach of those with a snorkel and a large lung capacity.
With some of the friendliest locals in the Mexican Caribbean. Isla’s diversity, from the fisherman, artists and musicians to divers, chefs and ex-pats, make up a community unlike any other. You'll have a chance to experience the easygoing charm of the people, mouth-watering Mexican cuisine, and local shops as you explore this most picturesque and peaceful paradise.
We dreamed for over a decade of creating a beautiful Caribbean sanctuary where guests could unwind, refresh, and immerse in comfort, tranquility and timeless style. A place where stress dissolves in the beautiful blue sea, sunsets take your breath away, and the daily grind returns to a welcome fragrance in the morning air.
